Ankle Sprain: It may heal on its own with rest, ice, compression and elevation and a gradual return to your normal activities. However, a period of time in a boot or use of crutches may be necessary depending on the severity. The dr will usualy : Base his decision o palpating the region of injury to see if you have pain, place ankle thru range of motion and watch you walk and ask for your feedback. This coupled with the amount of time that passed will help make his decision. 3.4-4 weeks is certainly sufficient time if your not feeling pain. It is important to do strength training excercises afterwards. I still say get clearance from Dr.

You : You can engage in any upper body activity you like, and can also swim.  I would not engage in any activity that involves you standing or putting any pressure on your foot / ankle or leg.  That would include cycling.

: High ankle sprains involves the anterior tibia-fibula ligament. This type of sprain requires very aggressive treatment immobilizing for a minimum of 4 weeks. I would immobilize on crutches for 4-5 weeks and re-evaluate at that time   When you bear weight the talus helps to separate the bones . If this fails surgical consideration will be needed.

Cast to boot...: Depending on the severity of a sprain, many people can avoid a cast all together with the use of a walking boot and/ or crutches. If your physician has decided you need a cast then he/ she can provide you with an estimated time frame based on how much damage they noted with the physical exam, and any imaging that may have been ordered.

Ankle sprain: You can use a walking cane to help decrease the pressure on your ankle. I would also ice the area and take anti-inflammatory medications as needed. I would also consider an ankle brace to help stabilize the ankle at this time.

Any ankle sprain: It does not have to be bad at all.  Ankle sprains generally require some kind of immobilization while you are going through the healing process.  As for what device is used to immobilize that is up to the discretion of your healthcare provider.  However, walking boots can be used for any grade of ankle sprain.

Time heals all : Wounds. Your still in a normal time frame for ligamentous injury, i'm not sure any foods or supplements have shown to improve healing quicker......Ice helps, resting when single and support of the foot/ankle when standing.
