Lots of fluids: The primary, unassisted method passing ureteral stones are through drinking lots of fluids and trying to develop enough pressure from the kidney output side to push the stone through. However, 8mm is a fairly sizable stone and it may not pass on its own. Recommend seeing a urologist who may be able to help break up the stone with external sound waves if it does not pass on its own.

Not likely: You can try expulsion therapy with an alpha blocker like tamsulosin.  It's pretty big though and is not likely to pass spontaneously.  You need to see a Urologist.  You need to drink enough water to have 2L urine output daily.  If you have a stone in your ureter right now, you would likely be in significant discomfort.  Dont screw around with this and get seem by someone ASAP.  Emergency Room

Likely needs to pass: While it is possible to dissolve certain types of stones(i.e. uric acid stones with urinary alklanization) it is much more likely that the stone will need to pass. Note that many patients are actually not aware of the final passing of the stone per urethra as it is NOT the painful event people expect

6 weeks: It is always in your best interested to pass a stone on your own, but it is not good for your kidney to struggle to pass the stone for more than about 6 weeks.  With the bladder symptoms it is probably all the way down to the bladder, but sometimes the last part can be the hardest for the stone.  Unfortunately, drinking lots of water does not help to push out the stone.

Spasm and trauma : The ureter may spasm which may hurt.  The urine may be blocked which causes increased pressure in your collecting system and pain.  Or the trauma to your urothelial lining can cause pain.

See a urologist: Drink lots of water and take Flomax (tamsulosin) to help dilate the ureter. See a urologist if pain is severe, he may require a ureteral stent.

Kidney stone: Drink plenty of liquids and strain all your urine through something like a handkerchief. The stone will look very tiny. If you retrieve it, it will be analyzed by the laboratory to see what kind of stone it is. If you don't retrieve a stone and have no symptoms, you may have passed it or it may still be present. Notify your urologist who may send you for another imaging test.

Possibly, depends: Yes a stone could go down ureter with nephrostomy in place..with the tube you are safe from complete obstruction.  You did not say how long tube in and plans.  Check with your urologist today and get your questions answered.
