my tonsils have pus pockets on them. which illnesses cause these other than strep?

Any bacterial infect: Any bacterial infection can cause exudate on the tonsils.  But pockets full of white discharge may be food particles stuck in small pockets or crypts.  These are called tonsil stones. Many times what are thought to be pus pockets are these tonsilliths.

one tonsil is huge and covered in pus, the other is fine. tested negative for both strep and mono. any suggestions?

Tonsilar abscess: Please see an ear, nose and throat specialist.  If you have pus on your tonsil that is not getting better may need to have it drained or removed as it may be an abscess.  Antibiotics can help but sometimes the infection can keep coming back.  If you have difficulty breathing or swallowing, go to the ED right away.

had strep  and compete the amoxicillin.(2nd time in 45 days).  still have pus pockets on tonsil. am i still positive for strep?

Probably : Probably. Do u have pain or fever? If so u may need alternate antibiotic.

Yes: If you have beefy red tonsils,pain and fever you could have either strep or a virus. Only testing can tell the difference. Some people are strep carriers, never get ill from it but can have test positive for strep. These don't need treatment.

i picked at my tonsils earlier the following day with strep and tonsil stones came out. now, my tonsil has a gigantic black mark on it that's surrounded by an influx of even more white pus. should i be concerned? what is this??

Tonsil Stone: Greetings, this sounds like a deep pocket or crevice within the tonsil itself. Gargle with water after meals. These stones can be problematic and may even lead to chronic infection. See your ENT for confirmation.

Get examined: get a culture for strept and get a mononucleosis test.. You will need a bacterial throat culture and possibly an std CULTURE OF YOUR THROAT IF RELATED TO ORAL SEX.

No: Just take your antibiotics. Gargling with salt water can help the pain. Peroxide slows healing.

my 9 year old son had strep 4 weeks ago and just got it again . doc gave a stronger antibiotic clindamycin. when will the white pus on tonsil go away?

A week or so: Strep is usually not resistant to antibiotics. Some times the antibiotics have a hard time penetrating into the tissue. Sometimes kids can have a year with multiple strep infections. Don't worry.  It gets better.

Strep or viral: A rapid throat culture is the best way to check for strep which would require antibiotics. If the test is negative, it's most likely a viral infection. Mono is less likely unless the symptoms are days old. Antibiotics are not used for viral throat infections.

i was diagnosed with strep throat two weeks ago and have pus on my tonsils again, should i go to the doctor?

? you want treatment: Many sore throats are viral and true strep is killed easily by a variety of antibiotics.That said, you can get strep on multiple occasions and re-infection would require another round of treatment.They get better in a few days either way, but you risk complications and continue to spread it if not treated.
