Yes: If you have beefy red tonsils,pain and fever you could have either strep or a virus. Only testing can tell the difference. Some people are strep carriers, never get ill from it but can have test positive for strep. These don't need treatment.

The amount of symptoms can also depend on how far into the illness a person is, before she shows up at her doctor's office for evaluation.
