NAtural Process: When there is injury to our skin, inflammation occurs which means the area becomes red, warm, tender and with swelling.  The swelling occurs under the skin layers and then can leak out of an open wound.  The fluid contains water, protein, electrolytes and cells that give it color.  This is a natural process and aids in healing.  As it heals, the drainage will decrease.  Keep it covered.

Shower and keep dry: If there was packing take it out and shower normally. Use mild soap and keep it dry with gauge. May need to change it frequently if lot of drainage. If they instructed u to pack it, then follow there directions. U also need to c ur doctor to make sure it is healing well.

Depends...: For small abscesses, it could just be 2-3 days.  For larger ones, days to weeks sometimes.  Doctors look at how deep the abscess was, if there was surrounding infection (cellulitis), if there's drainage, where it's located... So a lot of different factors.  Best thing you can do is check with your doc, they should be able to give you an estimate.  Good luck!

hello i had incision and drainage under arm for a boil. the cut was 4cm deep. its been almost 3 months and the wound still oozes some blood and pus.

Hidradenitis suppurativa: You may have hidradenitis suppurativa.  This is a chronic infection affecting the apocrine sweat glands.  Apocrine glands are found in the armpits, breasts, and gluteal region.  Each of the regions can be affected by hidradenitis.  It may require chronic suppressive antibiotics.  If these fail to resolve the infection, the glands may require surgical removal.  Hope this helps

i had a c-section and am 8 weeks pp.  6 week check up, gynae advised that all looks good with the wound.  checked it today and seems that the incision has opened a bit - no discharge.  is this normal? it's over a weekend, should i contact my doctor?

See your Dr.: Any incision failure should be brought to the attention of your GP or surgeon immediately. This is an open wound and should be treated as such with antibiotic ointment and gauze covering. Avoid getting water on it while it is open.

Not So Bad: The pain from an "i and d" is dependent on the location & severity of the abscess and the method of anesthesia.  A simple one just under the skin can usually be done with local anesthesia. Deeper abscesses usually require a trip to the or and the help of an anesthesiologist.  Most importantly, the pain caused by the abscess will soon be gone.

Call your surgeon: If you are having drainage call the surgeon. He or she may say that it is expected or may want to see you, depending on what you tell them.
