Check it out: Make see that you are drinking enough water, 1/2 your body weight in ounces, plus more when physically active and 2 for 2 for caffeine  is often recommended. Dark urine can be a clue if this is the cause. If not dehydrated medical assasement definitely warrented.

Not common: Any antihistaminic can cause  urine retention,  but it's a rare side effect,  other side effects such as dry mouth, somnolence r more common,  usually  common side effects r written on the patient info leaflet dispensed with drugs, or on boxes for over-the-counter meds.

i have urinary retention after bladder sling surgery. doctor tried to surgically fix it but still can not void. what can i do?

Second opinion: Releasing the sling is a simple procedure and should have worked.
It often results in leakage again but not always.
The only time i've seen this in a patient w/o a preexisting problem
that did not reapond to release was when the patient was very anxious.  This will require further evaluation by a doc who has more experience with slings than it sounds like yours might
after releasing i'd stretch it.

had foley put in for urinary retention after my tlh. nothing done to find cause. gyn is treating me for this. is gyn capable or should i see urology?

Not uncommon: Urinary retention after surgery is not that uncommon.  It should be temporary (less than a week) and if not , it is not unreasonable to request a consult with a urologist.

Up to 24 hours: However if benadryl is causing this , better avoid and use an alternative ,  better through your doctor. This side effect of benadryl might not go away with repeated usage, also it can a be a side effect of other antihistamines, may be less with the newer ones as cetirizine or loratadine, so better run it by your doctor, good luck

Urinary retention: While it is very painful, death from urinary retention would be rare. If it did happen it work likely be related to infection, kidney failure or both.
