Variable: Fat necrosis will often improve with time but particularly if it is a larger area it may never completely resolve.  A lot of the diagnosis of fat necrosis involved the clinical scenario and impression.  Imaging can often be helpful.  A biopsy is the most definitive.  Make certain your surgeon is sure it's fat necrosis.  If there is any question about a lump see a breast surgeon for an opinion.

Until taken out: Fat necrosis is a common occurrence wherever there are deposits of fat. There may be prior injury. The damaged tissue provokes an inflammatory response with scarring. The appearance can mimic breast cancer but is not a cause of cancer. Small lesions may resolve but most require removal if troublesome.

is it possible to mistake a breast lump for fat necrosis while it actually is a carcinoma? i know clinically it looks like each other but can imaging or biopsy make the right diagnosis?

Breast biopsy can: The 'gold standard" for diagnosing breast cancer is still a breast biopsy of suspicious areas  and not "imaging". It is always best to have an actual portion of tissue for the Pathologist to "see" the cancer cells if present.

i have a small lump on my breast. its underneath my skin and is less than a cm in diameter. its painless and doesnt itch. i had breast reduction in may 2020 and i think it may be fat necrosis but i just want to be sure. should i be concerned?

: Breast trauma needs to be significant to produce necrosis. The necrosis is distinguishable from carcinoma by digital mammograms but U/S may just detect a breast mass which can be mimicked by actual necrosis.

Need more info.: 1) "necrotic breast lump" means, to me at least, a tumor that has outgrown its blood supply and died.  This is usually a diagnosis made after surgery. 2) what kind of visit are you referring to?...Preop visit?...Operation?....Postoperative?  I'm sorry that i couldn't be more helpful but there are too many "missing pieces" here.

No: Fat necrosis in the breast is usually the result of tramatic injury.  This is also self limited. Surgery to the breast(enhancement, reduction, lumpectomy, biopsy, etc) can result in tissue damage that can manifest as fat necrosis - that is usually self limited. In 20 years, I have seen one patient with fat necrosis in the hip/buttock - that was due to impact trauma. I've not seen it in the breast.

Depends on cause: Fat necrosis due to trauma to the fat usually heals by itself, though it is a slow process.  Fat necrosis can also be part of systemic illness, e.g., diabetes and pancreatitis, in which case the underlying issue needs to be addressed.  If it is traumatic fat necrosis, you may need to the address your or your partner's behavior.

if someone leaned really hard on your breast: is dat a risk for fat necrosis or does the blow needs to be harder? like surgery or if a ball gets hit in your breast? if it does create necrosis will this go away?

Possibly,: if bruising is noted and pain continues, then this could be an issue.

Accepted Answer

No: Fat necrosis does not become breast cancer. Sometimes fat necrosis can look concerning enough on a mammogram to be biopsied. The calcifications and scarring from the necrosis can, at times, resemble breast cancer. However, once proven, fat necrosis is a benign diagnosis.
