Depends: The recovery from anesthesia can be anywhere from a few hours to a few days, depending on what medications are used, how long your surgery is, your age and other medical conditions you may have. Effects from local anesthesia (numbing medicine placed at your surgical site) usually last for 4-24 hours.

going for breat lift surgery tomorrow at 12pm. i have to take my birth control pill with a sip of water. obviously i'm on npo for general anesthetic, can i take my pill at 9am with a sip of water?

4 AM to be safe...: Npo guidelines for general anesthesia haven't changed much in the last few years. But, 6-8 hours is definitely sufficient for taking a pill with just a sip of h20. Don't worry and...Don't worry!

i am having bunion surgery shortly & wanting to know if i will be at risk from the general anesthetic as i take dihydrocodeine 30mg 3 times a day?

Tell doctor: Please tell both your surgeon and your anesthesiologist about all the medications you are taking, including over the counter medications and herbals. The medication you mentioned does not increase your risk of anesthesia.

Confused.: A cochlear implant is an effective procedure to retain some hearing in patients with total deafness.  The ear surgeon will apply for this and depending on the surgeons' report to the insurance company, should not take more than a few weeks.  If you are talking about the actual procedure, it takes about 2 -3 hours.  Why don't you ask the Otologist?

Surgery and a Cold: Possibly. Both your anesthesiologist and surgeon will conduct a focused history of this illness and do a physical exam.  They will then assess the risk of undergoing an elective procedure in the face of your current health status. Fever, a productive cough, malaise, reactive/congested airways can increase your risk of complications peri-operatively.

Depends on situation: If surgery was extensive or prolonged, more meds are given during the course of general anesthesia and recovery will take longer. Conditions such as old age or poor function of the liver or kidneys can make medications take longer to wear off.  So it's hard to say how long grogginess will last.  After a short procedure in a healthy patient, the effects of general anesthesia will wear off quickly.

does the cochlear implant surgery works if the patient has unilateral hearing loss ??

SSD : (Single Sided Deafness) is definitely a disability  however there are not many studies about the use of unilateral Cochlear implantation for the treatment of this condition. Suggest an in person evaluation with an ENT specialist in this surgical procedure. Hope this is helpfu!!l Good Luck!

PONV: Post operation nausea and vomiting appears because of narcotics given during surgery, or in recovery, to alleviate the pain after surgery.
Females have more risks then men, obese latine women are at more risk, the ones having that before, or the ones that experienced motion sickness. If you smoke the risk is lower.

since alcohol is is a depressant,  in high enough doses could it be effectively used as a general anesthetic for surgery?

Accepted Answer

No: Alcohol was used before an effective anesthetic (ether) was discovered but it does not provide deep anesthesia and is difficult to titrate (prevent overdose).

is a deviated septum surgery usually done under local anesthetic or general anesthesia?

Accepted Answer

Depends: Can be done under sedation or general, and choice is based on the patient, patient's airway , surgical skills and preferences, location traditions and anesthesiologists training.
