Buprenorphine helps: Buprenorphine (suboxone) is used as a medication for detoxification and/or maintenance for opiate addiction.  It works by binding to the opiate receptors, providing partial stimulation to these receptors, but not causing a high.  Buprenorphine also blocks other opiate medications from acting on the receptor, so the addict is not able to get high while taking this medication.  Mutual support helps.

Suboxone: Suboxone is a combination of 2 drugs (buprenorphine and naloxone) .  The Buprenorphine is very long acting and the Naloxone is short acting. The short answer to your question is the blocking action declines over a 2 to 4 day period.

im on suboxone & have surgery soon. i know it blocks most opiates from being effective although i hear oxymorphone(opana) has better success then the others in pain relief for post surgery ppl on suboxone then most other painkillers. is this true?

Good question: We have very little good research to assess the outcomes of opiate addicts based on the severity of the addiction.   We generally think that heroin addicts are more seriously addicted than those who have abused pain pills.   I just know there are serious exceptions to that rule and the best plan is one that is individualized and one in which a physician helps you make some good decisions.

Use as prescribed: If this is what your doctor suggested you should follow his or her recommendation. 10 hours is usually okay if the opiate is short acting and may need to wait longer if its a long acting opiate. As a general rule you want to be experiencing moderate withdrawals which your doctor can discuss with you. Good luck.

Do not loose hope: You should never loose hope. Go to your family and friends. If they have abandoned you, god won't never do that. Test my theory even if you are not a believer. Talk to god tonight at your bed in silence, nobody around. Person to person, like your friend, like your father. No protocols. You and him. Be silence, humble yourself and after talking, listen in silence. Be honest.Cry out and he'll listen.

Opiate receptor : Suboxone, just like other opiates, can cause a change in opiate receptor physiology. Most opiates do this at the mu receptor whereas Suboxone also causes changes at the kappa opioid receptor. The change does not seem to be permanent and things can return to normal after a period of drug free interval which can vary between individuals.
