Not all anesthesia: Agents cause nausea. Nausea is associated with anesthesia agents and also specific surgeries that increase the risk of nausea(ponv), like breast, pelvic, eye and ear surgeries. Also increasing the risk of nausea in patient risk factors like history of vertigo or motion sickness. Another factor is pain drugs like narcotics used for postoperative pain. Propofol was used to treat nausea in cancer pat.

Yes, : you don't have to receive propofol. Many different intravenous medications to get you asleep and gas to keep you asleep, the latter can induce sleep also

Why ask here? : It may be propofol, it may be midazolam, it may be fentanyl. Different docs use different drugs. Why don't you ask them? Call 'em up. Be sure to check with your insurance carrier. Some will cover certain drugs and others won't. If your doc's choice is not covered, be sure to let them know. They may be able to get authorization from your carrier. Getting one may take a few years (a joke, sort of).

: Half-life: Propofol is bi-phasic, with its initial half-life being relatively quick, around 40 minutes, and its terminal half-life usually being 4 to 7 hours. Context-sensitive half-time may be up to 1 to 3 days after a 10-day infusion. The clinical effect of propofol is much shorter in duration.

if the purpose of propofol during a colonoscopy is patient comfort, why didn't they wait longer to start rolling back the sheets and expose me in that indignifying (but necessary) position? aren't there methods for assessing when the pt is "out"?

: Propofol does typically work pretty quickly but, yes, the doctor should have waited until you were asleep prior to exposing you. You probably should let your doctor know so that is not done again the next time you need a colonoscopy done. Good luck!

It has become very popular since it has very few side effects; very little "hangover' feeling, and very little other effects such as nausea or anxiety.  However, it can depress breathing. An anesthesiologist should supervise your care if you are going to receive rocumonium or any muscle relaxant.
