Hamstring strain: Recovery make take as long as 6 weeks.  You need to get with a physical therapist and start rehab this may shorten your recovery.

Rest first: relative rest until you have full painfree rom and can flex knee against mild resistance without pain. Swelling and local tenderness should also be gone 
After it heals:. 
Plan exercise as part of overall program which should include multijoint compound movements. accessory exercise for hamstring include glute-ham raise, supine hamstring curls on ball, Romanian deadlift. Foam roll and stretch.

Strain: There are degrees of strains.  Some have tears and some do not.  This needs to be seen by a doctor to tell the grade of strain or if it is something else.

Pain behind thigh: Pain, often described as sharp, shooting in the back of the thigh, is the main symptom after a hamstring injury. Weakness and inability to flex at knee or bend at the waist toward the toes is also a common complaint. Rest, ice and decreased hip and knee flexion will help decrease acute pain. Physicl therapy may be indictedo help expedite functionl recovery as well.

Get evaluated: Hamstring strains can be chronically problematic if not treated properly. I would follow up with an orthopedist to make sure you did not have anything more than a strain. If the injury is severe enough you can get partial tearing or even a full rupture of the tendon from its insertion site. If it is just a strain then you might need some therapy. Either way see an orthopedist since its been 3 mo.

: A muscle strain means some muscle fibers were torn but the muscle is still intact and connected to bones at both ends. Over time, with rest, the torn fibers will heal, then with gradual return to full exercise the tear can be strengthened and built back up. However if not allowed to heal first, the small tear can get larger and may develop scar tissue which can’t be as easily strengthened.

Yes: Hamstring injuries are very common. They also can be very problematic. While you are recovering stretching is essential however you're not stretching hard. You're stretching to release tension and to give normal length to your hamstring muscles. Gentle high rep/low weight work out exercises are also recommend.  The key is to exercise to induce healing without re-creating your injury. Good luck.

was  playing ball, i strained or pulled my hamstring area (gluteal fold area) right side. can it heal on it s own?

As long as it did -: not pull the boney attachment off. it can heal. also depends on the severity of the tear 1,2 or 3 complete. muscle is not able to be sutured, but if the bone attachment to the pelvis is avulsed it can be repaired.
