Already formed.: Burning epigastric pain made worse by or unrelated to food is probably the most distinguishing symptom of stomach ulcer.  When these symptoms occur, the ulcer is probably already formed.  Symptoms like these can occur when there is no ulcer and are less responsive to therapy.

: Although decreased, there is still a risk of gastritis or ulcer with these medications. Caution is still required. You should follow your physicians advice as to whether or not you need acid suppression along with them. Good luck.

GI care: It seams that you are being evaluated for these conditions. How long on Protonix (pantoprazole) and carafate and how much benefit? Are some of your symptoms newer since on this regimen? Bloating and yellow stool may be suggestive of a need for eval of liver, your blood work would better tell this story. Follow up with your gastroenterologist.

Wide Range Possible: Pains around the breast bone can be from your heart or gallbladder as well as from the stomach. I'd humbly suggest you see your pcp for a quick work up (or go to the er if pain is more severe). Heart atacks can sometimes seem like heartburn or indigestion. This would be the worst case scenario. Continued pain in this area needs to be evaluated rather urgently though, because of that fact.

Gastritis causes: Was the gastritis documented by endoscopy? That is really the only accurate way to diagnose it. Gastritis could be a precursor to getting an ulcer if caused by h. Pylori or nsaids.

It could be either: if pain persists see your doctor who may prescribe a PPI or may want to do an endoscopy

Stomach ulcer: Inflammation is the reaction of your body to any insult, when it happens in the stomach it is called gastritis. There is redness and swelling happens in the mucous membrane.
When there is an ulcer there is break in the mucous membrane like you see an ulcer on the skin.
Irritation may progress to be an ulcer. Both can cause symptoms.
Stomach ulcer has an increased risk to become cancer.
