Body changes: Dietary changes and digestive changes can change the consistency of stool. As we age changes in the anus can also occur. If you are concerned consider seeing a colorectal surgeon who can do an exam and make sure all is normal.

i always feel bloated, and i'm 5;2 and weight 120lbs but my stomach tend to be distended a lot. when i take laxative i empty very well i get a flat stomach again. any suggestions? could it be that i have problems emptying my bowel?

Gastroenterologist: I would consider a diagnosis of gluten or lactose intolerance to explain your frequent abdominal bloating. However, if it's simple gas buildup from gassy foods, take simethicone 1/2 your after meals to prevent gas buildup. Drinking hot water helps break gas down and also relieves bloating. See a gastroenterologist if symptoms persist.

See your doctor...: Rectal bleeding is a symptom of potentially serious anorectal or intestinal pathology.  The possible causes include inflammatory bowel disease (crohn's or colitis), diverticulosis (it is), or irritable bowel, gastritis, peptic ulcer with bleeding hemorrhoids.  Suggest dietary restriction of caffeine and alcohol as well as trial of an acid reducer e.g. Pepcid (famotidine) ac.  See your doctor asap.

what pain medication can i take for irritable bowel disease? bentyl (dicyclomine) has no effect and 5mg of percocet is no longer working. the pain is excruciating.

Makes it worse: Opiates are BAD and temporary solutions to any kind of intestinal disorder.  They may temporarily mask the pain, but by also slowing down the activity of the bowel they ultimately make the symptoms worse.  Anticholinergic drugs like bentyl (dicyclomine) may or may not work. See your PCP or a gastroenterologist to make sure you have the right diagnosis and the right treatment. There are many available options.

i had a flexible sigmoidoscopy a few days ago after plenvu bowel prep. now constipated-passing v small, hard stools frequently but unable to empty bowels fully and v uncomfortable. is this normal after f sigmoidoscopy? reluctant to take more lax!?

: You had a thorough cleaning out with a colonoscopy prep when a prep for a sigmoidoscopy is much less rigorous&amp; is usually something like a couple of fleets enemas 2 hours before the procedure. I recommend eating fiber, taking a stool softener and drinking plenty of water. If you have an urge to have a BM but can't, insert a dulcolax rectal suppository. Enulose is a gentle laxative as needed.

26 year old female. suffering from chronic constipation. diagnosed with ibs. eating healthy and active 5 days a week 2.5l water a day. have seen a dietician. enemas -have to take them weekly or nothing happens they work but bowels never feel empty.

New meds: While new Rx meds like Amitiza and Linzess are indicated for IBS with constipation, you require a prescription. Until you get one or instead, try generic miralax 1-2 capfuls daily, and/or dried fruit like prunes, dates, figs, apricots. Generic Dulcolax (stimulant) may also help, but should NOT be used daily. Good luck
