Poor: When one finds metastasis to multiple sites from  a primary colon cancer the lesion was probably detected late in its development.  If the patient is in good condition the primary if not resected should be removed.  Chemo with FOLFOX and possibly avastin (bevacizumab) should be attempted.  Kidney lesions are extremely rare but can respond to chemo and if causing complication should be resected.

Options..: If colon cancer spreads only to the liver, it can still potentially be treated successfully.  There are multiple liver treatment options (surgery, radiofrequency ablation, sbrt, endovascular chemo/y90, etc.).  He should be seen at a cancer center with a large liver surgery/treatment volume.

Yes: NOT "curable" but definitely treatable...Direct perfusion anti-neoplastic drugs for one approach and possible immune therapy on the "horizon" ...A positive attitude is necessary and helpful.. METASTATIC .CANCER IS A CHRONIC DISEASE!

No: If there are only a few cancer areas (nodules) surgery may be an option. Depends on the number and location of the cancerous nodules, a surgeon should review a CAT scan of the liver.

my husband (59) was diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer that spread into his liver 1 year ago. with chemo ,the cancer has stay contained to the liver. we have been told he will have to stay on chemo rest of his life. would you seek another opinion?

: That's a good question.  I do feel it is important to feel comfortable with the doctors and team taking care of your (or your husbands) health.  When you are dealing with a fairly serious disease, such as stage 4 cancer, I do think that getting another teams perspective is reasonable.  Not all cancer centers use the same approach, and one may have options not available at another.  I wish you well

Trouble: Your dad has serious problems. The cardiology and oncology docs should discuss the options and then present them to your dad.

Yes: In these cases radiation would be used as a palliative treatment as opposed to a curative one.  Depending on the size, location, number of lesions, the patient' s performance status, and other factors radiation can be a very effective treatment.  Sometimes stereotactic body radiation can be used on the liver.  Also, some patients may be candidates for microspheres treatment for the liver.
