Depends on many ....: This is a simple, but loaded question. It really depends of the dosage and frequency of use (often once/day), funtional status of your liver and kidneys, nutritional status (protein-binding property of this med), and your age (kids get rid of quicker, slower in adult by factor of 2), and use of other medications. I am sure u r being monitored while on this med..

i have been taking 25mg of 6mp (together with allopurinol) for years and have just stopped. how long until the meds are out of my system?

Should not do this: Allopurinol with 6 MP or AZA are relatively contraindicated because of increased toxicity. Once you stopped the meds, they are out of your system in 2-3 days but effect may linger on

does 6mp help with back/joint pain that is caused by inflammation?it helps with rheumatoid arthritis but does it reduce crp for system inflammation.

Not recommended: There is no data to suggested that 6MP will prevent joint damage. There are many more effective therapies.

Possibly for long: 6 mp can be used for long time as long as Crohn's is being controlled.Close observation for infection for infections and malignacies is recommended.

severe colitis, 6mp helped, no longe effective, dr urging remicade (infliximab).now trying aloe, which seems to have helped many.are we running any risk by wwaiting?

Yes: Uncontrolled disease creates several areas of increased risk including colon cancers, abscesses and fistula formation.

17yrs chronic diarrhea, celiac and microscopic colitis. various meds. on 6mp now & pure glutenfree diet. no improvement. other remedies?

Difficult problem: Be sure of the diagnoses; be strict with the diet; make sure there is nothing else going on (including small bowel lymphoma-complication of celiac); 
sometimes steroids can help.  Symptomatic rx with cholestyramine-nonspecific constipating effect (watch for vitamin deficiencies).  Sometimes rx for bacterial overgrowth can help.
Complex, need GI doc/center with much experience in this. 2nd opinion?

i have autoimmune pouchitis if i go back to a iealostomy  will the pouchitis go away. i am afraid of taking imuran (azathioprine) or 6mp. ?

Accepted Answer

You may feel better: Returning an ileostomy will reduce many symptoms.  Some symptoms may persist, depending on the cause of the pouchitis.  Returning the ileostomy is recommended if you are not responding to the normal treatments and the symptoms are making your life difficult or impossible to live.  Most patients tolerate Imuran (azathioprine) and 6mp well, so discuss fully with your physician.

how is chrohns treated in stomach besides prednisone? do biologics/6mp work on stomach? dr. is busy and hard to get answers. 15 min sessions. help.

Get support: Studies suggest Biologics in conjunction with 6mp work well. Go to CCFA Crohn's &amp; Colitis Foundation of America for more help. I would consider getting a second opinion from a GI who has more staff and or time to respond to your questions.

can the medications typically taken for ulcerative colitis (remicade, 6mp) effect male infertility?

Usually not: Remicade (infliximab) has lot of other side effects but not male infertility.

i have leftsided colitis.tried 6mp, but developed pancreatitis. i am managing with asacol (mesalamine) and colocort enema. still get blood in the stool. advice?

Confirm,escalate: I would have your doc relook to reassess the disease and then, if active, consider biological therapy (remicade).
