Many possibilities..: Infection, inflammation and even allergic reaction.  Worst is allergic reaction.... We call it angioedema.  It can progress very quickly.  If the swelling extends to the inside of your mouth or interferes with breathing or swallowing... Call 911 and get help.  If not.. Call you doctor or get help to treat it.

Tonsillitis: If you are under treatment for the tonsillitis and able to completely avoid the allergy trigger, the swelling should resolve in 10 to 14 days.

Water: Your body is collecting water in the form of edema and it is a reflection of poor metabolism. In fact, if you have any heart or nervous system symptoms this could be severe vitamin b1 and/or magnesium deficiency.

i got bit by my cat last night the area is now red and swollen. what type of medicine will they give me for this?

: This is an infected cat bite and requires prompt treatment with appropriate antibiotics to avoid septicemia. I recommend proceeding to the ER ASAP as you may need IV antibiotics in view of the redness&amp; swelling of the wound. Your cat has most likely had its rabies shot.  You may need a tetanus booster. You'll need follow-up care for this infection. The ER MD will decide on the best antibiotic

Muscle Strain: A muscle strain may lead 2 pain and swelling. A specific cause is scapulothoracic dysfunction. It could also be a benign fat tumor called lipoma.  More likely if this had not come to your attention until you bumped or hit it.  Could also be a cyst that has become infected or inflamed under the skin.  My best bet is a muscle strain.  If it is red hot or swollen, it could be a an infection.
