how long do you let a chalazion go before you visit an ophthalmologist?

As long as you wish: Chalazia, in and of themselves, don't harm the eye, though if they are big enough they can either obstruct or blur the vision. Hot compresses, 10 mins, 4x/day for 3 weeks will often get hese to resolve, but if they don't and you want it gone, that is the time to see the ophthalmologist.

my ophthalmologist says my chalazion is too diffuse to be removed. it is really small and you cant really see it and can only feel it. is it possible that it is a permanent bump?

: Most will resolve by time but recurrence is likely.

i have multiple styes or chalazions i'm not sure which, should i see an ophthalmologist or optometrist?

Ophthalmologist: An ophthalmologist is a fully trained eye physician and surgeon.  Optometrist are non-physician providers that have limited training in eye disease.

visited ophthalmologist and said i have a chalazion but he wont do surgery because its small its over a year old so compresses wont help what can i do?

Accepted Answer

Not to worry: Chalazia are benign cystic lesions in the lids representing the end stage of the battle your body made with a stye.  Once formed, the only issue is the appearance.  I am guessing that yours is so small that it can only be felt and cannot be seen.   It will cause no problems so unless you are frankly obsessed with its presence, you should follow the advice of your ophthalmologist.

: Although possible, this seems unlikely. If the chalzion is symptomatic, get another opinion about surgery and/or intralesional steroids. If it's asymptomatic, don't do anything

2 month old painless lump on upper eye lid. 2 ophthalmologists diagnosed chalazion. recently noticed eyelashes falling, 2nd ophthalmologist says there is no eyelash loss. scared that lump is sebaceous cancer but the doctors are missing it. i'm 26 yo.

Ask both eye Drs.: One can just ask both eye doctors about eyelid cancers. Eye doctors (ophthalmologists) are the specialists who can identify eyelid cancers. If both say the lump is not an eyelid cancer with a high level of certainty, then it is not an eyelid cancer, with a high degree of confidence. Of course, a patient would continue to follow-up with the eye doctor until the lump resolves over time.

round hard lump on my right lower eyelid, on the lacrimal duct for almost 2 months. ophthalmologist says its a chalazion. my under eye is very dry. the lump does not hurt, it has some yellow inside the eyelid. still worried it could be malignant?

: You should trust your ophthalmologist. Chalazion is easily recognized so I doubt of any misdiagnosis. Take care.

A few new things: You were probably referred by an ophthalmologist for some condition in which the nervous system and eyes interact .  Many of the tests are the same but the emphasis will be more on how the eyes are having difficulty due to nervous system problems.  You probably will think the exams are similar but the interpretation will be more in depth in the direction of the brain and nerves.

Depends: If i want a good house, i go to an architect who studied design & material use & can incorporate it in a workable design. Although a carpenter might put up a great house  on their own, i would not expect it to be of equal quality. The analogy is simple, optometrists & ophthalmologists study design & materials while opticians translate the designs/rx into proper frames & fit.

is it normal to have very light blueish tint in the sclera? but not the whole thingits the same in both eyes & was only visible in flash..last visit to ophthalmologist was month ago, he didnt point out any such thing. concerned?

: A bluish tint to the sclera may be perfectly normal. However sometimes it can signify a thinning of the sclera perhaps related to uveitis.
I would just touch base with your ophthalmologist to make sure that in your case it’s completely benign
