Allergy: Over the counter Diphenhydramine (Benadryl) can be very helpful. 
If allergy is life threatening you should have your doctor prescribe an EpiPen (epinephrine).

Yes: Food allergies can cause hives, but only associated with the specific food you are allergic to.  So if you are getting hives while avoiding that food it is not the food allergy that is the problem.  The unintentional weight loss is not normally associated with food allergies and hives can sometimes be associated with other immune, infectious, or cancer type illness. See your doctor.

Look for: diphenhydramine which is the generic of Benadryl. They should know what that is/have it there. If you try Zyrtec, (cetirizine) take 10mg daily. Best of luck!

Any recommended: Dosage of any OTC antihistamine, either first or second generation, will be effective,  more important though is avoidance of re-exposure to the offending food till problem is sorted out. Keep antihistamine handy for accidental exposure, if severe reaction, keep epipen (epinephrine) handy too, see your doctor/allergist if the problem is bothersome, best wishes

It's your son: It's not about you but about your son who has become allergic to something you eat.   Allergy develops when genes and environment interact.   I presume you are posting this on behalf of your wife or partner otherwise it would be weird for a male to be breast-feeding :)
Depends on the foods, some food allergies tend to go away in a couple of years, others such as peanuts mostly not.

Less so: The best treatment for food allergies defined as having symptoms after ingesting certain foods (and not just having a blood testing stating food allergy is present) is first and foremost, avoidance and secondarily by carrying Epipen(Jr) which is adrenaline which can be injected into the person's thigh ASAP after contact with the allergen. Prednisone is much less useful.

Should be fine: There are no guarantees but if one has eaten a food in the past and has not had a reaction to that food then the patient is at no greater risk than the general population to eat that food in the future.

Rare : It will be very rate to foods that you have already eaten but like anyone three is a chance to get food allergy if you eat something for the first time.
