However, the usual approach is to get an ultrasound of the thyroid and evaluate the nodule or nodules.  A biopsy may be necessary.

Potential complications of surgery is removal of the parathyroids, or damage to the nerve to the vocal cords, but this is uncommon when performed by a surgeon who does this procedure regularly.
