how does a humidifier affect your lung health?

Yes, In a Dry enviro: A humidifier can be helpful if the surroundings are very dry, such as in winter with "forced hot air" warming.  Our nose, nasal passages, trachea all act to humidify our inspired air.  If the air is too dry, these structures, too, can become dry.  Keep in mind that humidifiers, if not kept lean, can also impart  bacteria to the air, so some caution is necessary.  Refer to package directions.

4 month old coughing with whole body/lung capacity, wet sounding, has been a few weeks, nebulizer/humidifier/suction doing nothing to help. what next?

Mgt: These respiratory symptoms, particularly when they occur at this age, requires follow up with your Pediatrician. 
I would recommend an assessment for Pertussis, wheezing and pneumonia. If there has been a fever, please monitor the temperature and note it down with the date/time for your physician.  A follow up appt is available online:

Humidifier for Lungs: Your airways love warm, humidified air, coupled with frequent forced coughing to expel mucus. A mist humidifier or long, hot shower works well. If you can't expel the mucus, forced deep breathing, coupled with chest percussion may bring up the mucus.

i have a dry cough and burning lungs because i inhaled humidifier smoke (which had essential oils) through my mouth and choked on the vapor. i wanted to know why i am experiencing just these symptoms and what it may be?

: I don’t (and I’ll bet you don’t) really know what “essential oils” are. You’re probably inhaling moderately irritating chemicals that are irritating your bronchial tubes. Usually doesn’t cause permanent damage (but, of course, sometimes they do). Check with the manufacturer - I’m sure they’ll be happy to tell you - Ha)

Pediatrician: assessment is needed, this can very well be reactive airways disease leading to night time cough, or maybe an upper respiratory infection to start with, so he will need prescription medications after evaluation. Kindly avoid Benadryl at this age, unless prescribed, wish you both wellness

Follow care guide : By the manufacturer, cleaning with water and vinegar to prevent mold build up is important, and keeping it dry when not in use. It doesn't grow bacteria in the lungs, wish you well

is a humidifier good for chest congestion?

Accepted Answer

Usually: A cool mist humidifier can put more moisture in the air which can help with allergies, congestion and when you have a cold or the flu. Some ultrasonic humidifiers are nice, but may be a bit more expensive. I don't recommend a steam vaporizer, especially when there may be children in the house since it is full of boiling water and cause serious burns if the child gets too close or tips it over.

whenever i sleep with a cool mist humidifier, i wake up with discomfort in my chest and feel completely drained. why does this happen?

Too much mist?: Making an environment that is uncomfortable to sleep in is a good way to feel drained in the morning.  Try turning it down, or at least directing the stream away from your face.

which humidifier is best when you have a chest infection ? cool or warm and why ?

See below: In my opinion, it makes no real difference.  The key is to increase the humidity in the room where the humidifier is placed.  Getting in the shower can be just as good for clearing out mucous.
