Pediatrician: If your child is otherwise healthy, you may consider observation and rest as most ear infections in children resolve spontaneously. Antibiotics are often used unnecesarily for ear infections in children, resulting in community problems of antibiotic resistance. But if your child has high fever, vomiting or the pus is draining from the ear, you should take the child to a pediatrician.

will amoxicillin treat pink eye if it is bacterial? my 5 year old has an ear infection accompanied by her eyes now oozing green. wasn't sure if amoxic

Accepted Answer

Not a good choice: Amoxcillin is not available as an eyedrop as it is painful and very likely to induce allergic response.  Other antibiotics are available for this purpose.  If the eyes of a 5 YO  appear infected, you should see a pediatric ophthalmologist right away.  Vision is too valuable to take chances with.

my 40lbs 5yr old was given a dosage of 12.5 ml twice a day of liquid amoxicillin (400mg/5ml) for ear infection. is this correct?

Max dose: That is the maximum recommended dose for your child's weight, age and reason for using the medication.

i have a 2.5 year old who had tubes put in june of 2015, after an ear infection 2 weeks ago the one ear is now bleeding. should i be worried?

Yes: you need to take her to be seen, by her Pediatrician or ENT. It seems that she is otherwise fine, but you need to be sure that everything is just fine with her external and middle ear on that side. Kindly plug that ear until you get to see her doctor, wish you both wellness

my 4, almost 5 year old has an ear infection & cough. i gave her zyrtec-5ml  at 8 last night and bromfed-2.5ml around 345 this morning. is this ok?

Probably!: the dosing for each medicine is fine, however you don't want to combine both at the same time, in your case there's about 8 hours difference, but the zyrtec stays in the body more than that, she may be sleepy so better don't give any more of either till 8 pm, if needed after that, bromfed would be more helpful, read the labels carefully and don't exceed recommended dosage, wish you both wellness

Different issues: The middle ear otitis that benefits from tubes is different from the canal infections that come with swimming. Middle ear infections are head size related and fade as the kids eustachian tubes enlarge with age. Swimmer's ear is related to time in the pool and retention of water after swimming. Remove the water and end the problem.Tubes would have no benefit.

5 / yr & 1 wont clr: There are multiple parameters for deciding on tubes. One basic mantra "5 in a yr or 1 that won't clear" (in 90  days). An evaluation by an ENT that would do the tubes would give you an idea if your situation would benefit. Some 5yo kids are at the point that their infection frequency is declining & the benefit would be minimal.

Cholesteatomas: They can sometimes be seen, but doing an MRI is more informative

Maybe,maybe not: Sometimes a kid with a cough & congestion can develop pressure behind the ear drum by simple fluid accumulation. An exam would be required to decide if it were infected.

Depends: Acute ear infections often accompany upper respiratory infections such as a cold. She/he should complain of ear pain and likely hearing loss. Definitive diagnosis needs an ear examination and then treatment with antibiotics.
