Sorry but..: Sorry but this requires an exam, x-rays and some tests that need to be done personally and not over the internet. How long ago was the rct and crown done? When did the symptoms first appear? &quot;no one knows&quot;?- who have you seen? This may require a second opinion by an endodontist and\or general dentist. A cbct scan (3d image) may be helpful with a diagnosis.

Fracture: The tooth may be fractured. It's called a "cracked tooth syndrome". If your general dentist cannot determine the cause, seek the experience of an endodontist.

To treat ...: If the nerve tissue (nerve/blood vessels) within the tooth die, then the toxic products from their death drain through the tip of the root and cause an infection in the bone - leading to bone loss.  The root canal removes the dead tissues and seals the canal within the tooth/root to protect the bone.

Pulp issue: By the time a crown is needed, a tooth has sustained a lot of damage...Either from, cavities/fillings, broken/chipped, grinding/clenching, to name a few. Rct is typically done before crowning these types of damaged teeth to prevent an abcess forming after the crown is placed. If a rct has been done already, then crowning is recommended to strengthen the tooth/enamel structure.

Too late: If you have been diagnosed that a specific tooth needs root canal therapy, you have two choices... Have it done, or extract the tooth. There really is no middle ground with this problem.
