when to get a hematoma blood clot drained? i took a hard fall over 3 weeks ago. bruise is gone, but large lump is getting painful again. is it a clot?

Maybe,maybe not: Some of the bruises over bony prominences (shin, hip, etc) form a calcified (bony) mass that can take months to gradually resolve. Clots tend to break down and be absorbed into the vessels servicing those tissues. Your pcp can examine and see what this is doing. Most recommend avoiding clot drainage when possible as the maneuver can introduce infection into deep tissues.

Possible: When the needle was withdrawn from your vein pressure was not properly applied or was not long enough. Hole in your vein licked some blood under your skin. Normal - no. Possible - yes. Dangerous - no.

Hemangioma: a benign tumor made of blood vessels. Removal is usually performed with laser or electrical cautery. See a dermatologist and STOP SHAVING IT!

Yes: It does happen with blood draws.  The needle may go through the vein.  When the tech pulls back into the vein you may get some blood into the subq tissue.  Certain meds will make you bruise more easily. It will turn blue, green, yellow and fade away over 2 weeks.  If for some reason it is way larger than you have ever seen get your doctor to look at it.

Love Hickey!: Just be happy she loves you! perhaps you take Aspirin on a regular basis, or like me, do crossfit and have to take nsaids just to function! it is just a bruise. If none of these scenarios fit and the bruise continues to grow, or you get more, then you should probably see your internist and get a complete blood count to make sure everything is as it should be.

Hematoma: The immediate thing would have been to put pressure at the site of needle puncture. For the next few hours it would have helped to ice the site. Now you can leave it alone and let nature take its course. It will heal but may leave some pigmentation for some days to months.

Depends: Some skin infections will develop a painful skin swelling but without abscess fluid to drain out. Some skin infections form a pocket of abscess fluid that will drain out pus. Depends on which type of infection you have. Go back to see your doctor to be sure the antibiotics are working for you.

Normal: Some of the blood drawn during the needle stick leaked inside your skin, its ok and it happens, unless there is a hard lump or extreme pain then you should be ok, it will disappear just like any other bruise.
