Unlikely: Ovarian cysts are unlikely to become infected unless you have an infection in the uterus and tubes.  They form in the sterile environment of the ovary and are usually not exposed to germs. 

If you do get a bad infection in the uterus or fallopian tubes, the infection can spread to the ovary and create a tubo-ovarian abcess.  On ultrsound this looks like a large ovarian cyst that is infected.

Infection???: There are no infections in ovarian cysts.  They hurt bec they rupture not bec they are infected.  Infection presents with fever severe abdominal pains and very sick feeling.  These are called pid.  Pid is very serious.

Late period: There are many causes of a late period. Take a home pregnancy test to exclude the obvious. The track your cycles over the next few months. If they remain irregular you can bring in your menstrual calendar for your obgyn to review.

Exam & imaging: If an ovarian cyst is big enough it may be felt by your doctor during the pelvic exam. A pelvic ultrasound will then confirm the presence of a cyst. Other forms of imaging, like ct scan or MRI will also show ovarian cysts

Large cysts can be functional and produce abnormal levels of hormones which could cause pain, abnormal bleeding. Some cysts may cause pain during intercourse or with physical activity. Some make you feel full or your clothes fit tightly.

Its extremely important to determine what it is, as best as possible, before deciding about removal.

Pain, determine need for surgeryyou also include the risk of torsion as well

An ovarian cyst: Has absolutely nothing to do with  sex, u need to see your gyn to see wht type and how big it is, certain types and sizes can resolve on their own , others will need surgery.
