Loosening : Loosening of a hip prosthesis is something that needs to be evaluated closely. Most important is to explain the nature of the loosening. This usually requires multiple x-rays and laboratory tests to differentiate between septic & aseptic loosening, while evaluating all implanted components. Additionally, your history, activity and body habitus all need to be taken into account.

Because the stem has loosened, it would be a good idea for you to use crutches or an assist device to offload weight from the affected limb. This should also decrease any discomfort that you're experiencing as well. Once a full work-up has been completed, your orthopedic surgeon can then proceed with a revision of the appropriate components.

i had a hip replacement that got so infected, that they couldn't replace the prosthesis, because the ball and joint were eaten away. i just learned about the reverse operations. would that type of surgery help me?

Ligament laxity: If the joint goes beyond the acceptable range of motion for its stability, as it can with ligament laxity, it can be more prone to dislocate.

See your surgeon: This is potentially serious complication that needs to be treated by your surgeon.  Depending on how long it has been present, this may require a surgery to wash out the joint, or removal of the joint, followed by weeks of antibiotics.

Dislocated total hip: Sudden onset new kind of pain is an alarm sign after hip replacement. Dislocation will make your leg short and rotated in an abnormal way and you will be unable to walk. Call your doctor as soon as possible and make arrangements for an evaluation. If you are unable to bear weight and your leg is short call 911 for a transfer to the closest er.

what are the dislocation risks after hip replacement? is a person at greater risk of dislocation after a complete hip joint replacement?

Yes. : Yes. By nature of the fact that the muscles and capsule that surround and support the native hip are cut during the approach to the hip during surgery, there is a risk for dislocation after surgery before these structures have had a chance to fully heal. We teach patients after surgery to avoid certain positions with their legs, and place a pillow between their legs for the first few days after surgery to prevent them from moving their leg into a position that we know will risk dislocation. This risk declines significantly 2 to 3 months after surgery. However, even after that, an artificial hip can dislocate. If the hip is implanted in a less than ideal position, it can be at risk of dislocation during normal range of motion, and this could be a reason to revise the surgery to improve the position of the implants.

i had a total hip replacement on 11/27/2007. i am having pain in my hip joint area. i saw the surgeon and he said no clue as my hip shows very little wear. what should i do?

Other sources: While early wear may be a finding consistent with sunk iris and pain, the absence of wear means very little regarding pain.  Could be lots of things including: a loose prosthesis, synovitis, tendinitis of near muscles, residual scar tissue, and infection.  In you case can't say which if any, but you doc should consider each.

Hard to say: Hip pain after a replacement can be from several sources depending on the approach used for the replacement.  The most common source is trochanteric bursitis from the side of your hip.  This can be treated with therapy, an injection or both and rarely requires more surgery.
