Many signs: If a child is getting dehydrated, one can notice absence of tears if crying, a darkening of the urine (tea colored), decreased urination and output, an increase in the pulse rate, a "sinking in" or softness of the eyes, doughiness of the abdomen and tenting of the skin and decreased sweating.  A lay person may not know some of these signs or symptoms.  Call or see your doctor if concerned.

Thirsty? Dark urine?: If you are thirsty, you are already about 5% volume depleted. If your urine color is dark yellow toward brown shades, you are very concentrated, consistent with dehydration. Drink water at about 1 qt/hr max, with occasional electrolyte containing drink if dry from exertion. If thirst resolves / urine lightens, then you have improved your situation. If not, see dr for advice & assistance.

A little difficult: It's actually hard to tell if someone is dehydrated unless it is extreme.  This is because the body has certain mechanisms to combat dehydration (such as increased thirst, increasing your blood pressure, decreasing urine output).  In an extreme situation, you'd see all of the above as well as maybe some confusion.  I encourage fluids such as gatorade if you expect to be dehydrated.

Dehydration: The severity of symptoms are different in  children, adult  and old people. Can be mild, moderate and severe. Thirst, dry mouth or buccal mucosa, dry skin, poor skinturgor, sunkeneye, sluggish, tired, poorappetite, constipation, decrease urine out put to nil, dark urine, confusion and unable to think straight. Blood test blood urea nitrogen is high. Diarrhea & vanco for c. Diff?Good luck.

Turgor: You can check the volume status of elderly individual with skin turgor. The best site to check skin turgor on an elderly person is the skin on the clavicle or "collar bone". Checking skin turgor is done by slightly pinching and raising the skin and observing how quickly the skin returns. The slower it returns, the more dehydrated the patient is. And even better way, check urine output and color.

Yes: Caffeine is what is in most of them, and others contain fair amounts of sugar as well. Both of these have diuretic properties and you lose more fluid than you are taking in with them.  Energy drinks are not good for you in excess.  I think one of them is probably fine, or maybe two - essentially similar to 3-4 cups of coffee, but higher doses can cause problems -anxiety, insomnia, hypertension.

sunken eyes 
decreased frequency of urination or dry diapers 
sunken soft spot on the front of the head in babies (called the fontanel) 
no tears when the child cries 
dry or sticky mucous membranes (the lining of the mouth or tongue) 
lethargy (less than normal activity) 
irritability (more crying, fussiness with inconsolability)
acute weight loss.

.???: You are either dehydrated with concentrated urine or have orange urine because of a dye you ate or a medication ( rifampin, pyridium).    I have never heard of a random orange urine problem.  Make sure you do not have blood in your urine that can color urine darkly--and might look orange to some people.

Dehydrated: You can tell if you are dehydrated if you need to drink lots of water all day. That requires a visit to your doctor. There are many possible causes but there may be none at all.

A low blood sugar is very important but easy to control in most patients.  You MUST see your doctor about a low blood sugar.
