See below.: Only way to get rid of a bunion is with surgery since this is a structural deformity. Other non-surgical treatments are wider shoes, orthotics, padding. In some instances an occasional injection may help reduce pain and inflammation, although this should be only done sparingly.

Bunion: You can't realign a bunion yourself. Only way to place bone in correct position is by surgery. You can try a bunion splint or wider shoe for relief of pain.  Suggest you consult a podiatrist.

No miracle cure.: The splint can be used as a conservative management for those with bunions.   It holds the big toe in a more straight alignment when you are not in a shoe.   It does not alter the shape of the bones.  It may help to stretch out a tight capsule or tendon.  Only surgical management can alter the actual shape of the bone.

Prevent bunions: No. Orthotics will not prevent bunions at your age but slows the progression of the deformity. Orthotics are meant to hold the structure of the foot in its ideal position and give incredible comfort.

Conservatively,first: Surgery is more successful than conservative measures, but generally is done only if such measures fail.Such measures can include wearing orthotics or wide shoes with a low heel, performing stretching exercises to keep the joint loose, keeping a pad on the bunion to protect it, using night splints designed for bunions, applying ice to it for a few minutes after activity, and using nsaids.

am considering bunionectomy for moderate bunion.  dr wants to use a screw and i am opposed. is there any way to cut and realign bone without using scr?

No screw loose.: There certainly is. I have used K-wires as well as screws for fixation for years. Either one works just fine. The K-wire does not remain in the wound as it is removed after several weeks. The removal is performed in the office and is generally not painful at all. There are some surgeons that often use no fixation at all, relying on  bandaging for adequate immobilization. Not recommended by me.

It could be Bunionet: Is a condition caused as a result of inflammation of the fifth metatarsal bone at the base of the little toe.It is usually characterized by inflammation, pain and redness of the little toe. If this what you have and bother you go to an orthopedic surgeon and have it treated.

Pressure on the bump: Bunions don't always hurt. They often become painful for several reasons. First, the prominence of the bump may rub against shoewear and can cause either acute (sudden) or chronic (longstanding) irritation. Second, in many cases the joint has shifted partway out of socket and that can cause pain.  There is also a nerve that runs over the area that can become stretched because of the deformity.
