Tonsils: The tonsils are part of the immune system.  They help you fight infections of all sorts.  The reason we can take tonsils out without much concern for affecting the body's ability to fight those infections is because of significant redundancy in the immune system.  You actually have more tonsils that we don't take out, like on the back of the tongue.  There are also a lot of lymph nodes in neck.

Tonsil Cyst: Tonsil cysts are usually visible on the surface of the tonsil and can be seen during an oral exam. If you are concerned about a tonsil cyst, make sure to see your primary care provider or your local ear nose and throat specialist.

Consult with ENT: There are two common indications for having a tonsillectomy: recurrent infections and airway obstruction.  The goal of surgery would be to either decrease the frequency of infections or improve the airway.  The recovery from the surgery is mostly related to throat pain.  Management of this is the most significant issue after the surgery.  Bleeding may occur after the surgery in a small percent.

Ask your surgeon: I have answered this question before.  I do not understand why you do not ask your ENT surgeon.  His diet may be different than other ENT doctors.  For the record, i will tell you what i recommend.  1.) sucking popsicles for 2 days; 2.) milkshakes, with skim milk, a tsp of hershey's chocolate syrup; 3.) jello, pudding, custard; gatorade. The idea is keep well hydrated.  Severe sore throat x 10days.

: The scab should fall off piece by piece when you are eating or drinking and you will likely not notice.

Tonsils: The tonsils are tissues in the back of the throat at the same level as the uvula but down along the sides. They are usually pink like the rest of the mucosa of the mouth. When they are infected they are oversized (come out of the fossa) and can have little white dots on them. This would be a strept infection. I hope that helps. Not by smell alone: Infected tonsils smell.  Bacteria between teeth that's not removed by floss smell.  Bacteria on top and back of to get smell, as does infected adenoid, infected sinuses, food debris &amp; bacteria rotting in gum pockets, gastric reflux, and so many other causes.  Your General Dentist and General Physician may have to collaborate to help you solve your halitosis.
