i have a pulled muscle or charlie horse, would a hot or cold compress work?

Accepted Answer

Varies: It varies somewhat.  Cold is usually used to decrease swelling and inflammation to an area and can also provide some pain relief by numbing the superficial structures somewhat.   Heat, particulary moist heat can help to relieve muscle spasm and can bring increased blood flow to an area.  Most of the time, moist heat seems to work best for muscle injuries in my opinion. Get Checked out...: Was there any recent injury? Did you perform any activities that worsen the pain? Consider seeing your pcp or ed doc for exam and possibly ct or MRI scans.

Depends: Cold to decrease pain and swelling, heat to improve flexibility and blood flow to speed healing.  Use ice for the first day or two after an acute injury, then heat later.

i have muscle spasm, bit swelling and pain on my back (left side). sometimes it radiates to under arm on same side. i am using voltarin emulgel and chlorzoxazone (250 mg). would cold compress be helpful or warm compress in this case?

: Low back pain is mostly caused by injury to a muscle (strain) or ligament (sprain). Common causes include improper lifting, poor posture, lack of regular exercise, trauma. While topical NSAIDS may help, oral NSAIDS (ibuprofen or Naproxen) may provide more antiinflammatory effect. Alternate Cold therapy (20 minutes) with a rest (30 min), then Hot therapy (20 min). Continue the muscle relaxant.

Tmj : Tmj can do it all, even make you a little dizzy. If you have true vertigo- feeling of spinning or motion with stereotypic head motions then vertigo is more likely.

i have bad muscle ache since 2weeks now. started in calf both my legs then also my thighs.i put cold, hot foment..took cataflam, muscle relaxants but pain returns again.no redness or swelling.it hurts more on moving, walking. what can cause this?

LEG PAIN: You may have phlebitis (blood clots in your veins).  These can be sore and tender to the touch, persist for days or weeks, and spread into your thighs.  Best to be examined by a doctor.

Cardinal signs of: Influenza are sudden onset of high fever( 101 or higher with hard chills/sweats),body/muscle pain,respiratory symptoms(cough,runny nose).Easy to test for rapidly.Important to diagnose and treat within 48 hours of onset of symptoms.Anti-viral flu medicine works best if started within this 48 hour window.

If your symptoms: started recently and you're otherwise healthy, these symptoms are most likely early signs of an infection.  What type of infection remains to be seen. Sciatica : There are several potential causes.  If you have not injured your hamstring, one of the more common causes is a sciatica, which is an irritation of a nerve in the back and this can cause pain in the back of the thigh.  Don't hesitate to be seen.
