Acute HIV infection: Fever alone almost never is due to ARS; it only occurs along with other symptoms like sore throat, enlarged lymph nodes, and sometimes skin rash. ARS symptoms typically start 7-10 days after catching the virus (never sooner than week). Once fever or other ARS symptoms start, usually they last at least 1-2 weeks. If possibly exposed or otherwise concerned, see a doctor ASAP.  Good luck.

Possibly: An acute HIV infection can present with no symptoms or commonly fever, weakness sore throat and cough soon after exposure.  HIV may take months to progress to AIDS.

Get seen: Hiv is one reason for might sweats.  However other infections, lymphoma and other problems can cause might sweats.  Get checked!

i think i have a mild fever and experience pain in my shoulder/back. recently had safe sex with a guy who said he was negative. my lymph nodes don't seem to be swollen or tender, but my back itches sometimes.worried it might be hiv ars?

Safest to be tested: Your symptoms do not suggest ARS and people rarely lie about HIV when asked directly, so probably your partner isn't infected. And safe sex is effective if done properly (condoms for anal sex between men, oral sex very low risk even without condoms, etc). But all men who have sex with men should be tested for HIV and STDs from time to time. Since it's on your mind, probably this is a good time.

Rash: It sounds more likely that it is an allergic reaction to something.  The fact that it is not on the palms and soles of your feet makes other bad things less likely.  Skin rashes are hard to diagnose and the diagnosis depends on where the rash is, the color, whether there are blotches, raised bumps and many other things.  You can buy benadryl (diphenhydramine) in the pharmacy for itching and if it persists see DR.

Virus: It sounds like a bad cold or the flu. Start with hydration, rest and OTC rx. If it persists then see your doctor for a good checkup especially if the cough persists. ( may be bronchitis or less likely pneumonia)

Get tested: Hi. The symptoms you described are common with many viruses. Although fever is the most common symptom of acute HIV infection, the presence of a fever is not diagnostic of  HIV/acute retroviral infection (and the absence of fever does not rule out HIV). The only way to diagnose HIV is with a blood test. If you think you've been exposed to HIV/AIDS, then see your doctor and get tested.

You can relax. Virtually all persons with HIV have positive RNA or DNA tests by 23 days. You don't need to wait 6 wk for final testing. Ask your doctor or clinic about a DUO or "4th generation" test, for which the result is conclusive 4 weeks or more after exposure. I might have more advice if you'd like to say more about your exposure and any symptoms you may have.
