someone i know suffered a severe blood clot and one symptom was severe hip pain. every once in a while i have hip pain too. should this be a concern??

Most likely not: It is not clear if the pt had a blood clot in the leg or  to the lung. Hip pain per se is not a sign of a blood clot. There is more to the story we have not heard. It is important to note that pain in the hip is not noted to be a sign of a blood clot. If you take BCP it puts you at a higher risk.

Deep vein thrombo: phlebitis is a difficult clinical diagnosis and usually requires a duplex study to make sure.  You should see a doctor to be sure.

Yes: A good clinician can usually make that differentiation rather easily. A simple ultrasound will rule out a blood clot.

Sciatica?: Is there any swelling in the limb? It sounds like sciatica, pinched nerve in the back, probably not a blood clot. You would need a venous dopper to rule that out

Yes: Not directly but hip fracture will lead to stasis in blood along with immobility increase risk of deep vein thrombosis DVT tremendously . These patient should be on prophylactic dose anticoagulants.

Hip fracture: Hip fracture with its associated bedrest due to pain , immobilization and surgery will lead to increased risk of deep vein thrombosis (blood clots in the deep leg and pelvic veins). DVT may lead to clots thrown to the lungs and even death. Therefore anti clotting agents are prescribed to prevent DVT after hip fracture.

No: Unless you had severe injury to left hip and numbness occurred right after a large bruise " clot",  spontaneous blood clots do not cause numbness and look for cause in other areas. See a neurologist.

Exam needed: Bleeding for that length of time is abnormal. Pain should be evaluated in this context. Please go see a doctor right away.

Death vs Improvement: At 96 hip fractures and pulmonary emboli (blood clots in the lungs) are serious (not that they are ever not serious) and commonly lead to death.  With exemplary care and a lot of luck she might be able to pull through, especially if her mental status is good.  However you should be prepared for a fatal outcome, i'm sorry to say.

if an elderly person breaks a hip then develops a blood clot in the lungs, how would a blood thinner save his life?

Accepted Answer

2nd clot: If that person lives long enough to start a blood thinner (ie, they don't immediately die with the first blood clot), the issue becomes preventing a second, fatal clot. That's where treatment with blood thinners are important: preventing the second, fatal clot. Moreover, the first clot will gradually dissolve on blood thinners over time.
