Many things!: An osteoportic hip fracture can be lethal, especially for women.  It causes death in almost as many women who die from breast cancer. Osteoporosis is preventable. Once a hip fracture occurs, plating and pinning will usually occur, or a hip replacement, depnding on fracture location.

High risk. Complic: Fractured hips don't allow pts to stand up and walk. Some times the fracture send fat into the bloodstream ( fat embolism) killing pt.  Immobilization causes clots that go to the lungs and kill, or clots in the arteries ( strokes and heart attacks) also causes decubitus ulcers that get infected causing septicemia and death. Most elderly patients have comorbidities( other serious medical problems).

Physical Therapy: Most elderly patients experience a mild regression in their ambulatory status after a hip fracture.  Regular physical therapy is an important factor in maximizing their recovery.

Weeks: If untreated, the pain from  ahip fracture will last for several weeks until the bone heals nearly completely.  Evan after healing, if the fracture healed in poor alignment, it can still cause pain with sitting, walking or standing.

Geriatric hip fx: The fracture itself isn't what is life-threatening but the events following the fracture and immobility are. Being immobile and elderly leads to pneumonia, DVT, PE, MI, etc. This is why it is critical to treat a hip fracture surgically within 48 hours of the fracture to reduce morbidity and mortality as has been proven in multiple studies.

Physical therapy: Working with a physical therapist to increase range of motion, strength and improve gait is generally recommended.  Patients usually start with a walker and progress to a cane or no assistance with time.  Early weight bearing is encouraged in most cases.

Usually very good: If the 85 year is in good health and was mobile before the accident she will make excellent recovery once the surgical fixation is done. There is often some pain following the surgery, but the soft tissues heal in six weeks and walking begins the very day after the operation. Sometimes elderly people in hospital following spinal anesthesia will develop a fleeting bladder problem. Good prognosis.

Fair: Radiation and tumors will weaken the hip and can predispose people to fractures.  If the cancer has been eradicated, the fracture should heal with proper treatment and surgery.  If the cancer is still present, the hip can be stabilized but cancer treatment must continue.

PE and XR: Maybe mri, however this is usually not needed. Some may get ct but also not needed for DX usually, but can help plan surgery.
