Sketchy picture: how is your child doing apart from those figures? can be just common iron deficiency anemia, and how high are the platelets or the WBCs? also common to have some elevations with any concurrent infection. Likely: The best test for iron deficiency anemia (ida) is ferritin. Sometimes when there is inflammation (an possible associated anemia of chronic disease/inflammation, the ferritin may increase as an acute phase reactant). The "gold standard" for diagnosis is a bone marrow biopsy, but rarely needed. High platelets are also associated with ida. Treatment should improve platelets and ferritin.

Suspect so: If the serum iron is in micrograms/dl, then this is not high but within the normal range, as it can be in iron deficiency in which the patient has perhaps taken an iron tablet or eaten steak recently.  If the units for TIBC are micrograms/dl, then TIBC is distinctly high and this speaks for iron deficiency in any case. Don't treat iron deficiency without seeking a cause.

: Thrombocytosis, or high platelets, is defined as persistently greater than 450,000 platelets/microliter. Iron pills will replenish the low iron and hemoglobin and hematocrit if someone has iron deficient anemia. If a repeat CBC has not improved the anemia and platelet count, a peripheral smear should be obtained and possibly see hematology. Additional labs are needed for recurrent pregnancy loss

Ferritin levels relate to iron stores in the body, but also can be high related to liver disorders.  Parathyroid hormone can only be interpreted with a simultaneous calcium level, as it is the hormone that regulates calcium in the body.

Ferritin levels in the iron overload states are typically quite high and are typically &gt; 800; whereas chronic inflammation will produce levels  typically &lt;800.
