Accepted Answer

Not at all: MPV is meaningless if there's isn't already obvious disease involving the platelets. The reference range is set so that a few percent fall outside on either end. And some folks just have big or small ones.

: All laboratory results need to be interpreted in the clinical context and the doctor who ordered the tests is usually in the best position to do that. Talk to the doctor who ordered the tests. Having said that, your lymphocyte count is normal, It would have helped had you provided the actual value of MPV.

let's talk: Your dizziness could indeed but caused by low glucose.  An enlarged mesenteric lymph most likely has nothing to do with the dizziness. A mpv (mean platelet volume) is only a number representing the size of your platelets and has nothing to do with any of the other condition you have mentioned.  If that lymph node persists i would suggest a ct guided needle biopsy so a pathologist can evaluate you.

i have low wbc 3.1 k/ul and high mpv 11.4 fl what can cause this? i have fatigue and i have been having stomach issues too. metabolic panel is normal?

: All laboratory results need to be interpreted in the clinical context and the doctor who ordered the tests is usually in the best position to do that. Talk to the doctor who ordered the tests. Having said that, the two values you mention may be your normal, unless there has been a significant recent change. These values are not the explanation for your symptoms.

low white blood cells at 2.9 and high mpv and 12.5. does this look like a myeloid leukemia? i have also been having extreme fatgiue and stomach issues. if not what are some of the causes of these abnormal numbers and symptoms?

: High MPV can be seen in low platelet counts sometimes as a compensatory mechanism. . Low wbc can be a sign of autoimmune disorder, viral infection or be a normal variant. However if the low wbc is accompanied by low HCT and low platelet count, serious bone marrow disorders are the usual cause. A hematologist can advise you best.

i had a cbc, and had high mpv of 11.5. is it possible that i have leukemia? i do have several petechiae dots over my body, but not in a rash. also have intermittent ankle/shin pain. doctors say it's stress cause i have anxiety. other cbc stuff normal?

: MPV is a measure of platelet size &amp; some people have larger ones or the newer ones (stress related)are sometimes larger. Platelets are one of the shorter living cells, lasting only hours to days and normal overall platelet counts are good evidence leukemia has not invaded the blood production areas.

Nonspecific finding: Could be certain kinds of anemia i.e. Megaloblastic such as seen with B12 or folate (folic acid) deficiency.  Can also be noted with alcholol use, liver disease as few.  Sometimes MCV reads hi with clumping which my bring other causes.

Large platelets or .: Mpv means mean platelet volume. It may increase if large or 'young' platelets  are in the blood. Or falsely elevated due to platelet aggregation -  can some times happen during blood draw and does not mean there is any illness. In patients who have low platelets high mpv may mean that the bone marrow (where platelets are made) is trying to make more platelets- young ones are  usually larger size!
