Accepted Answer

Probably not: This would be most suggestive of polycythemia vera and at age 22 this isn't a consideration. You may simply be athletic. Reference ranges are set so that several percent of healthy folks fall outside. If you feel well, and your physician didn't make a big deal of it, stop worrying.

Neck nodes common: Lymph nodes are basically little factories where tissue fluid is filtered and lymphocytes that fight infection are produced.  Young childen are exposed to multiple viruses and bacteria through the mouth beginning in infancy, and lymph nodes enlarge to compensate, especially the chain of nodes along the muscle that runs from the ear to the collarbone.  You good test results are reassuring as well.

blood test sgot/alt 40 abnormal high, lymph 1.1, abnormal low, w/all mediastinal & bilateral hilar nodes enlarged + virchows node.  what could it be?

Until proved not...: ... Our principal concern is cancer. I would draw no conclusions from the lymphocyte count, the SGOT / alt being somewhat high is merely suggestive, but the big nodes are going to require biopsy. Maybe it's a medication reaction, sarcoidosis, or any of a host of other possibilities. But we want to get at the truth. Good luck.

my 26 yr old had enlarged groin lymph node for 5 . weeks . she had a blood test that was fine except for epstein bar ab . she had mono 5 years ago . her agg was high but also her igm was 58 , and she had no recent infection. should we be concerned?

: Enlarged lymph nodes indicate that there is some kind of infection in the immediate area. Since her enlarged lymph node was in the groin region, it could indicate any kind of vaginal/pelvic infection including STD's. She should have a Pap smear and culture to make sure there is no infection causing this that can be treated. Some STD's show no symptoms.

i have had swollen lymph nodes for 6 weeks now.. blood test can back wbc high rbc low. ct didn't show anything.. cervical lymph nodes 1.3 and 1.8cm.. ?

Need more info: Cervical lymph nodes can enlarge after an infection, but usually u have fever, pain, &amp; misery that goes along with an infection. Infection can cause high WBC and low RBC; however, other worrisome causes exist. Some infx last 6 wks, but usually they resolve in that time. More blood tests may b needed, but ultimately u need tissue (biopsy or excision) to make a diagnosis. TTYD or surgeon about it.

Differential Count: The test results should indicate the reference values for the percentage of lymphocytes for that particular laboratory in their automated differential count. If there is any question, the clinical pathologist can be requested to review the glass slide smear and verify or rectify the count.

Possibly nothing: It depends on how low. Lymphs are one of the types of cells that fight infection but in isolated general questions like this without numbers it is very hard to answer and usually a slightly low lymph count is meaningless. In your case if concerned asked your provider that ordered your test.

Depends: This depends on so many factors hard to answer breifly.  Typically?  No.  Sometimes, of great concern.  Usuall method if in doubt is to repeat in a month or sooner if you for example, have some sort of symptoms you or your doc are concerned about.  Everything from minor vial infections and colds to serious cancers can be associated with this.  Fortunately, usually the former.

It is 8: You have to discuss with the doctor who ordered the test as we can not comment on only one value in cbc.We need to know why the test was ordered, what your symptoms are and what the other values are. Lymphocytes of 8 are low.
Causes of low lymphocytes are either body not making not enough lymphocytes or they get destroyed.Common causes are

2autoimmune disorders
3steroid therapy
4others.

Explanation : Enlarged lymph nodes, especially in the neck are usually  due to an infection such as strep throat. Another common cause is infectious mononucleosis (mono). A blood test is usually done in this setting to prove that mono is the cause. If the nodes (lumps) don't go away and the mono test is negative, your dr. May consider x-rays or a biopsy to be explain the cause. You should make sure to follow-up.
