Second opinion: This certainly" sounds" like an umbilical hernia or possibly a very small ventral hernia. Get a second opinion.

Athletic pubalgia: can cause this and is seen in those who do running type exercise (usually). The tendons that insert on the pubic bone can become inflamed or thickened. If this fits the picture then MRI is the best choice for looking at the area.

Ultrasound hernia: I would expect to see a small fascial defect within the abdominal wall musculature.  The ultrasound should be able to demonstrate protrusion of fat or intestines through the defect with valsalva (bearing down). Ultrasound is rarely needed to diagnose a hernia but is probably the best test when the diagnosis is in question.

Hernia: They might be attempting to get you to do an ultrasound with valsalva or straining so that a potentially small or occult hernia might be seen.

NO: There is no always or never in medicine, depends on type of hernia.

Physical exam: Is good start.
Once healed, us can visualize the tissue planes.
Checking yourself can be accurate if you specifically locate a moving bulge, or fat or bowel going in and out in an area.
Surgeon can do some other checks as well.

No: Neither ultrasound nor any other imaging test is ideal to detect any inguinal hernia, whether small or large. These are found with a physical exam by your surgeon. The only time in which an imaging test can detect an inguinal hernia is if something gets stuck in it (i.e., incarcerated). Go see your surgeon.

if 2 doctors said i don't have a hernia, and if the ultrasound says the same, even with a "weak spot" - can i rule out a hernia? does ibs affect it?

I would believe: your doctors' advice.  Sometimes presence or absence of a hernia is not black/white, either/or.  You can develop a hernia over extended period of time.  IBS can affect it if you have vomiting or constipation that would apply mechanical stress to the area of the hernia.

CT: Although both ct and us can be used to evaluate a hernia, a ct provides much more detailed anatomic information.
