i was exposed to the urine of a patient known to have hep b. the urine could have had blood in it (it was very dark), i was wearing gloves but it splashed on my arm. i have a small cut on my arm. i have had 2/3 vax doses. should i be concerned?

: This is hard to assess. We know that the hep B virus can survive in discarded needles &amp; transmit disease through an accidental stick months later. Whether that would happen from dried out blood film on a surface is hard to determine. Saliva has antigerm properties. How it would enter your blood during feeding is unknown. If you are concerned about such an exposure just get tested.

: Little or no risk. It generally takes a lot more exposure to transmit the virus. Nothing to worry about. Anyway, you might have been vaccinated against hepatitis B in childhood, which has been routine in most industrialized countries (probably including the UK) for 20 years or more. If so, you are immune.

Ask the ordering Dr.: There are a whole bunch of Hepatitis B titers, and the meanings of each vary depending on a person's situation and past titers. The only way to be sure is to ask the Dr. who ordered the test(s). If a person at low risk for HepB, was vaccinated at birth, and got a titer done, it usually is the HepBsAb to see if he needs booster shots. If his titer is low or close to low, he can get booster shots.

: Maybe. There are reports of Hep B surviving for months in a needle stick causing an infection in a worker cleaning out a crack house. Though a different type of exposure it does suggest this virus is quite tolerant of outside exposure for a lengthy period. The person with Hep B would need to be in the active infection phase with circulating virus to be a risk. Many are dormant.

: Despite not knowing what a "plaster" is, Hep B a break in the skin to be transmitted that way.

Diagnosis of recent: Or old infection.  Depending on the tests done, the results can reveal (a) you have not been exposed to hep b, (b) had hep b vaccinaation, (c) had hep b infection and recovered from it, (d) have active hep b infection.

what temperature do you wash laundry with hep b blood on? also what happens if i accidentally put a blood covered handkerchief (in a red bag) in with other items will it cross contaminate and infect others?

: Any laundry detergent will instantly kill hepatitis B virus. Cross contamination cannot occur. Water tempreature makes no difference.
