i have gerd and have being having heartburn symptoms. im taking zantac (ranitidine) now daily and i still have heartburn. what medication is best for heartburn?

PPI: Proton pump inhibitor. This class of medications typically works the best for reflux disease. It is advisable over to use this for about three months, and then try and wean yourself off and see how the symptoms are. Do this with the knowledge of your primary care provider. They might need to send you for more tests should medication fail. Hope this helps!

GERD: Esophagogastroduodenoscopy (egd) is a test to examine the lining of the esophagus (the tube that connects your throat to your stomach), stomach, and first part of the small intestine. It is done with a small camera (flexible endoscope) that is inserted down the throat. Likely would suggest this to assess for healing first before stopping daily ppi therapy.

GERD: Gerd and laryngopharnygeal reflux can be a significant trigger for asthma, see a specialist (allergist) familiar with both LPR and asthma if you pcp does not seem to understand this association or recommend appropriate or effective management.

i have been using a ppi for over 20 years for gerd. it is no longer working as i have constant heartburn and burning and cramping in my stomach. i'm afraid that using the medication has caused low stomach acid and has weakened my les. ?

Legitimate worries: We are learning more and more about PPI’s and  their long term undesired side effects. Otherwise great drugs that changed forever the natural history of peptic ulcer disease. In your case, time to get together with your gastroenterologist for an upper endoscopy and further discussion about options based on findings. If overweight, losing weight remains critical.

i find heartburn relief with apple cider vinegar gummies after years of struggling. my doctor mentioned that it could cause silent gerd and stomach inflammation. are you likely to have silent gerd if you used to suffer from full-blown gerd?

: Silent GERD is a thing, but I wouldn't worry about it much. I suspect their comment was wondering why adding an ingested acid product (vinegar) to a reflux problem would help. I suspect it has less to do with the apple cider vinegar than the gummies. It has been known for decades that simple carbohydrate sugars will settle the stomach. I suspect a little honey or karo would help you as well.

diagx gerd/ulcers 10 mos ago.heartburn for 6 days after eating sweet/sour  chicken. no relief with prilosec or zantac.cant take nexium (esomeprazole). what can i do.

Carafate (sucralfate): Hi Maria, since your symptoms have been unresponsive to your usual regimen, your doctor should be notified.  Carafate (sucralfate) is a medication that may be considered for you, as it will coat any new or unresolved ulcers and help them heal faster.

i have gerd and am on medication but it has been bad lately.what can i do?

Double dose then dr: You can either double the dose (i.e. 20mg -&gt; 40mg)) or frequency (1x/day -&gt; 2x/day) or add an H2 blocker if taking a PPI.  If on an H2 blocker, then add a PPI. Make sure nor eating before lying down, avoid alcohol, caffeine, and spicy/fatty foods, as well as nsaids.  If no relief wi 1wk, see your clinician to rule out Peptic ulcer, more severe GERD or other cause.  Take Care!

PPI: Proton Pump Inhibitors (priolosec, nexium, (esomeprazole) protonix and others) reduce the acid produced by the stomach and help prevent esophogeal damage.  They should be taken daily for prevention. Consult your Dr to see if you need to take long term.  For occasional heartburn, there are a number of meds - zantac, tums, etc.  These will reduce hearburn pains, but do little to preotect against long term damage.

Diet and gum: An antireflux diet can help.  Also gum=chewing increases saliva production which is a good neutralizer of acid.

how long do i need to take medications for gerd?

Accepted Answer

As long as it takes!: Acid reflux tends to be a chronic problem. I typically recommend patients continue with treatment as long as their symptoms persist. There are some downsides to treatment which can include malabsorption of calcium so over treatment is possible.
