: Benign premature heartbeats can occur with or after meals and some feel it's related to distension of the stomach rather than to specific foods. However in view of what you tend to call a family history of these,I recommend wearing an outpatient heart monitor to ensure that there's no evidence of potentially serious arrhythmias that can run in families. Discuss this with your physician.

Concern appropriate: important factors that can help lead to an answer to this concern are your age, family history, other problems such as hypertension, diabetes, any prior cardiac or vascular disease.   It is true that heart pain can be referred to other areas, such as left shoulder, left arm, jaw, even right arm. Does it occur with activity, or stress, what relieves the ache--al important. is it a neck problem?

Time to see a doctor: A young adult woman who feels palpitations should be checked by her primary care doctor (Family Medicine or Internal Medicine, not Ob-Gyn) to make sure her body is ok from a general check-up point of view, and to listen to her heart. It could be a thyroid hormone problem, or could be that her heart is beating irregularly for another reason, etc... Additionally, a cardiologist can also evaluate.

No: it is not likely caused by the heart.  Muscle spasm that occur spontaneously are curious but normal unexplaind phenomena.  It is not enought to worry about yet

Strange symptoms: First, be certain that these symptoms are indeed emanating from the heart &amp; are true palpitations. One would check the pulse to see whether it's irregular or rapid at the time of symptoms. Otherwise you'd need to have an EKG at the time of symptoms or wear an outpatient Holter Monitor for 1or 2 days to record heart activity when you note these symptoms. You may instead be having ribcage pinches.

is there a common description of heart palpitations?  could they be consistent with regular twitching in the upper left side of the chest?

Palp: I have many different descriptions...The only description i can give from personal experience is a hard pounding that feels slow (random occurrence) or a light fluttering that feels fast (often when i lay on left side).... I have never had an ekg, echo, or any other heart eval though. I am the doc here just describing personal experience. Too much caffeine.

A full work up: Severe headaches should be evaluated with a full exam, + or - imaging like a ct or mri. Left arm and palp needs attention too. A holter or event recorder to assess the rythm and correlate it with symtoms. Full battery of labs.A review of the meds you take including any suplements and over the counter meds . Echocardiogram or stress test as indicated.
