Repeat the HCG: It is possible that your HCG level continued to rise after the first one a week before your miscarriage and is now slowly declining. There could be retention of some residual placental tissue that is still producing hcg.If there were still a viable pregnancy present one would expect a much higher HCG level after 2 weeks. Repeat the HCG to see if it is rising or falling. Consider an ultrasound.

Possible Pregnancy: Whatever clots or specimen you had when you had the miscarriage should have been examined by the pathologist to determine the presence of embryonic or fetal parts because otherwise the HCG elevation means you still have the conceptus/embryonic/fetal parts inside you. Other possibility is a growing tumor that is secreting hcg.

Hard to say: At those levels, the hormone will stop increasing regularly.  An ultrasound will give you the answer.

4-6 weeks: Once your HCG is below 5 miu/ml, your cycle should resume as prior, usually 4-6 weeks.

False negative assay: hCG is one of several immune assays prone to manifest a false negative due to the "hook" effect. These analytes have a broad range of values and the assay is tuned to detect a certain range only. But values well above as well as below the range can appear negative. Ask them to do a dilution of the sample and retest. That may reveal a positive result.

What time period?: Your HCG is still very low, as you are early in pregnancy.  It will take more time to see the trend and whether or it is rising appropriately.  Usually it doubles every two days this early.

Advanced maternal ag: Unfortunately it is a watch and wait scenario.  After the age of 35 the risk of miscarriage is much higher.  The pregnancy hormone does not exactly have to double but it does need to rise and we hope for the heart rate to stay 120-180.

Probably not: If your HCG has increased, you are unlikely to have lost the pregnancy. It would be useful to repeat the HCG levels in a few days.
