Avoidance measures: Removing oneself from the allergic trigger is the best advice but challenging at best when it comes to pollen that causes hay fever. After being outside, it can be helpful to change clothes and take a shower when a person returns home.  Also, flushing the nose with saline (salt water) rinse can help. Keep the doors and windows of the house and car closed and avoid using an outdoors clothesline.

Nasal sprays: The most effective treatment for allergic rhinitis (hay fever) are the nasal steroid sprays such as qnasl, nasonex, (mometasone) flonase, veramyst, etc.  They are safe and Nasonex (mometasone) is approved down to age 2 years. While it takes a couple of days to see improvement, they are well worth it.

Nasal congestion: If you're troubled by nasal congestion from hay fever or other allergies and don't want the systemic effects of decongestants or antihistamines, try nasal sprays such as flonase and Afrin. Discuss this with your physician or see whether your pharmacist can recommend OTC nasal sprays for you to try.

It can also be caused by post nasal drip, blood pressure meds, bronchiectasis or heart disease. Follow up with Dr who prescribed the meds and explain that the cough is not getting better. They will do more testing/ adjust meds/add new.

Allergies!: Sounds like allergies! Treat for allergies. Creams, ointments, and lotions may make the situation worse. Som topical with steroid may be indicated or helpful, but needs be determined and monitored by doctor!

Maybe: I actually don't usually recommend antihistamines for colds. In general, lots of fluids and rest are what the body needs...As your immune system does the job of fighting the cold.

Strep throat: Strep infection is caused by bacteria called group a beta-hemolytic streptococcus. Was he tested for strep and treated for it? If so, other causes of sore throat could be a viral infection, dryness of the throat caused by snoring, allergies, reflux, etc. An ENT specialist should be consulted.

? Both: Clolds tend to last for a few days and will have fever. Allergy on the other had will last weeks at a time, particularly season allergies, and is not associated with fever. Both can have nasal congestions, sneezing and discharge from the nose.
