Not normal: After removal of an IV catheter, the vein should seal itself.  Occasionally it may thrombose or clot, this process can be uncomfortable and is called phlebitis when it occurs in a superficial vein.   The concern is for possible infection and progression of clot to a deep vein. Please have it evaluated.

Phlebitis.: What you are describing is called superficial phlebitis.  It is characterized by a vein that gets hard, tender and inflamed.  Since the vein in directly under the skin, it is called superficial phlebitis or superficial thrombophlebitis.  Treatment would consist of heat and ibuprofen.  If it doesn't improve after several days then follow up with your doctor.

Painful vein: Small blood clots in superficial blood vessels can cause pain when touched. They are not dangerous, and the clot will usually dissolve in a few days at most.  Hot baths are helpful, and can stimulate local circulation which can speed the resolution of the clot.

Clotted spider vein: There is most likely a clot in the superficial vein. If you are at risk for blood clotting (pregnant, on birth control pills, recent flight, cancer patient, immobilized, hypercoagulability disorder, previous history of blood clots, history of trauma), you should see you doctor to make sure you do not have a deep vein thrombosis. Otherwise, warm soaks will help the thrombophlebitis resolve.

i banged the inside of my wrist on the flat part of a nail. it caused a minor abrasion that bled very little and my vein is now swollen, hard and painful. should i be worried?

Phlebitis : this is some type of phlebitis. given this is a superficial vein warm compress an NSAID should probably resolve the issue. if you would experience any redness or fever this can get infected should be seen.
