Probably not: Most of the time black stool is not of concern.
Lots of things can make stool black - iron pills, pepto bismal, etc. 
So unless it continues, don't worry.
However, bleeding from the upper intestinal track - ulcers, polyps, inflammation does turn stool black.
So, if it continues and you are not on iron post-delivery, do see a doctor. Tests can easily determine if you have a problem.

Black stools: Black stools is a sign of possible gastrointestinal bleeding. In babies some formulas might cause this problem. Have baby evaluated by pediatritian  as soon as possible.

NO: Alcohol can cause gastritis or other kinds of GI bleeding.  Stools could be black because of passing old blood.  Please see your family physician for evaluation and help.   This will only get worse with inattention and continued alcohol use.

No: You may take a fiber laxative like Metamucil and drink enough water daily so that your urine is colorless. For the long term you may try to increase your intake of fiber foods. Consult this site for fiber foods.

: Black stool suggests blood came from higher up inside the intestine &amp; was partially digested, turning it black. There are other causes of black stools, but this is something you should report to your doc.

i have just passed a very hard and painful black stool. should i go to the er and get checked? for a while i have been having hard stool and recently it had black 'chips' in them and a couple days ago it became more frequent and harder. now it is painful

Black : Black stool and black 'chips' in your stool could definitely be a sign of blood. Blood in the stool is typically manifested by tarry, black stool or coffee grounds (or frank red blood).
It is crucial that you seek medical attention to assess if you are bleeding internally. If you are feeling painful abdomen, firm abdomen, and/or light headedness, go to the emergency room.

It is appropriate to bring a sample of your feces with you to the doctor, as long as it is in a sealed/clean container. This way, you can have your stool assessed for blood.

Seek medical attention.

Likely fine: Breastfed babies can go a week or longer without poop. They utilize the breast milk so well, they don't make much poop. At 23 days, though, I'd be concerned tou may not be producing enough milk for her to make waste. You need to be sure she is at least back to her birth weight or higher, and that she is having 8-12 wet diapers daily.  See pediatrician to make sure these are happening and discuss!

i'm having multiple symptoms some including fever, severe nausea, pain in chest and left arm, bloody black stool sometimes none at all, find it very hard to urinate as well, everything makes me sick when i try to eat, vomiting blood. what's wrong??

: If you are having all of these symptoms, you need to be seen in an emergency room ASAP. Vomiting blood and blood in stools could indicate a GI bleed which can be making you anemic (low blood count) and this can lead to chest pain, even a heart attack. So, you need to be seen right away, today, in an emergency room to get diagnosed and treated. Good luck to you!
