Quantity vs Quality: While you're describing an adequate quantity of sleep, you may be suffering from poor quality sleep, for instance, sleep apnea, which can lead to inappropriate sleeping during the day. Numbness is more worrisome and needs to be evaluated by your Family Doc. If it happens again (especially w/loss of strength), call 911 &amp; get thee to an ER to evaluate for possible stroke (remember FAST).

Possible Carpal Tun: There are other possibilities, but the most likely cause for your symptoms is carpal tunnel syndrome. This is the result of compression of the median nerves at the wrists and it is common for people to wake up to "shake out the numbness."  i would recommend that you see a neurologist, but while you are waiting you can ice the wrists, try otc ibuprofen, and buy carpal tunnel splints for nighttime.

just started strenuous job. lot's of heavy lifting. next day, arms feel swollen (no pain) and hands fall asleep really easily. i have to keep my arms down to avoid hands falling asleep. hands also feel like i'm wearing thick gloves. what is this?

Edema: If you just started your job and have not done repetitive lifting before the swelling in your hands is primarily from exercising them.  Cool compress and NSAID may help. I would anticipate that as you continue to work your hands will get stronger and adapt to the regular activity.

Electrolyte problems: Electrolytes are substances in the bloodstream like potassium, sodium, calcium and others that control fluids in that medium. When they are "out of balance" symptoms like yours occur. Your OB MD should have suggested ways to improve your electrolytes like juices, and foods that contain these elements. Talk to your OB MD about them now as pregnancy involves increasing  blood fluid loads.

The : The most common cause of hand pain and numbness is carpal tunnel syndrome. This is entrapment of the median nerve as it goes through the wrist. The median nerve supplies feeling to the palmar aspect of the thumb, index finger, middle finger and in most people half of the ring finger. Pain is typically worse at night. It usually affects both hands with the dominant hand more involved. A tinel sign is present. That is an electric shock feeling when the nerve is tapped at the middle of the wrist.The nerve also supplies the muscles that raise the thumb and bring it across the palm to allow you to pick things up. When cts progresses it can cause pain to radiate from the wrist up the arm and even to the shoulder. It is often seen during pregnancy, resolving after delivery. Arthritic changes at the carpal tunnel can contribute. There is a family tendency because development of cts is related to breadth and depth of the wrist. Early on the symptoms are relieved by wearing wrist splints or forearm massage. Later surgery to give the nerve more room by cutting the transvere carpal ligament relieves the complaints. Contrary to popular belief, using computers a lot does not cause carpal tunnel.
The ulnar nerve or funny bone nerve runs down past the elbow and enters the hand through its own tunnel. It supplies the pinky and half of the ring finger. It is most often injured or entrapped at the elbow. Some people have an ulnar nerve that rolls in and out of the channel at the elbow. When that happens the nerve can be compressed by reading while leaning your elbows on the table or even during long phone calls. Emg test is the best way to determine which nerve is causing your problem and how serious it is.

Must be a reason.: Hands actually do not fall asleep without any reason.  There is a good reason but it cannot be known without understanding more about your symptoms.  When does it occur, when does it not occur? What part of the hand is affected? Is there any muscle weakness?  Is the r hand as affected as the left?  At the end of the day carpal tunnel syndrome and ulnar nerve injury are the most common causes.

Sleeping hands: It sounds like you are having tingling in your hands, this is often related to nerve problems in the hands, carpal tunnel syndrome is one form of this.  You cannot prevent this if it is happening, but you can see your physician for testing to determine the cause.

Nerve: Source of your symptoms could be at wrist, elbow, shoulder, neck, perhaps due to nerve compression, but maybe an evolving peripheral neuropathy.  Get this checked out, as most of these problems are fully reversible.
