is it normal for your knee replacement to snap when you put your leg into a frog leg type position?

Knee snapping: Yes. At the extremes of the range of joint motion, sounds like "snapping" are more likely to occur in both normal and artificial joints. The frog-legged position puts your knees through a relatively extreme position.

is it common to fx leg during manipulation knee after total knee replacement? what other complications can happen? mine being done in 4 weeks

Accepted Answer

Not common: Fx leg is not common unless the manipulation is done over 3-4 months from surgery.  The other potential complication is rupture of the patella tendon or quadriceps tendon. This is also rare.  Must do aggressive pt immediately after manipulation or scar tissue will reform quickly.

No: No that is not a "normal" complaint and there are many possibilities.  I would not hesitate to be seen and fully evaluated for it.

Common finding: You have disuse atrophy secondary to knee pain that is worse with ambulation.

Talk to your surgeon: Sorry to hear of your struggles.  Stiffness after knee replacement can be a result of many factors:  surgical technique, level of therapy after surgery, pain control, and more.  I tell patients that recovery is 1/3 surgery and 2/3 therapy !  its best to talk this over with your orthopedic surgeon, and have him/her explain the factors leading to this and how it can be corrected with the least risk.

Compression: The best way is compression socks, elevation and walking. Talk with your orthopaedic doctor and make sure that is what they want you to do.

Possible: Clicking after replacement is generally a function of the patella either jumping off the femoral component or impingeing agaist it but usually decreases after some time.

Manipulation: Likely scar formation with synovitis. May be related to effort, motivation, muscle inhibition, implant positioning, effusion, loosening, among others.

Check: This would be concerning for a DVT. You shuold be seen.
