A member asked:

Is it common to fx leg during manipulation knee after total knee replacement? what other complications can happen? mine being done in 4 weeks

Not common: Fx leg is not common unless the manipulation is done over 3-4 months from surgery. The other potential complication is rupture of the patella tendon or quadriceps tendon. This is also rare. Must do aggressive pt immediately after manipulation or scar tissue will reform quickly.

Not usually: The long and short is, no fracture is not common after manipulation, however it certainly is a risk. And the degree will certainly depend on your bone quality. If you were very old and severely osteoporotic then i would be a bit less aggressive in a manipulation. Really fracture is the only significant complication that we worry about.

No: It is very uncommon to fracture a leg during a manipulation. It would be most likely in a patient with osteoporosis or severe weakening of the bones. Manipulation is most effective in the 1st 6-12 weeks after total knee replacement, although in some cases may be helpful beyond that time frame.
