Varies : It varies somewhat.  A "hairline" fracture would by definition be non displaced, so you would not expect any obvious deformity.  Swelling, pain, and tenderness to palpating would be expected.  X-rays are really the main way we evaluate for a fracture if thers was significant injury and exam concerning for a fracture.

sports injury: shoulder sling recommendation for student living in the city. on saturday morning i dislocated my shoulder and sustained a hairline fracture on the top ball of my humerous bone. my doctor is recommending that i fully immobilize my right arm

First, : First, i think you should find a nearby orthopaedic surgeon who can monitor and care for you locally.  The fracture, as you describe, may have been a "hairline" fracture when you were first seen, but could become a displaced fracture with time and/or use of he shoulder.  That is probably why a sling and immobilization was recommended.  To limit swelling in the hand, move your fingers frequently and make a fist or squeeze a soft ball or ball of socks throughout the day.
Follow-up x-rays are important to help determine that the fracture remains "in place".  You can expect that stretching and physical therapy will be advised when the fracture is "stable", or unlikely to displace.  The injury you sustained can lead to ongoing problems, even if it is cared for appropriately.  To minimize this risk, find a trusted local orthopaedic surgeon, preferably one that cares for shoulders and/or sports injuries, and follow their advice as this is a common injury.  If you let their office know you have a fracture, many orthopaedic surgeons will make efforts to get you a quick access appointment.  Though it has been 20 days since your post, it is not too late to make sure it is healing in good position. Good luck!

Most elbow hairline : Or minimal ormarginalfractures of the radial head ( where one typically gets this type of injury in the elbow) are treated in a sling for about a week. It's important to get the elbow moving once there's some comfort as residual elbow stiffness is often a problem.

Repeat x-ray : Go back to your doctor . Hopefully , you were given a splint . If not get at least an arm sling for comfort. If there is still that much pain and you can't move it , then a repeat x-ray may be Indicated .

Depends: Really depends on location of fracture.  Most fractures take )-8 weeks to heAl,. Oat doctors like to get elbows moving as soon  as it is safe to avoid residual stiffness.  Your doctor needs to look at you injury patten to determined the next best step for you

Doctors Splint: Splints provided by your doctor are usually specifically made for proper anatomical immobilization.  When healing a fracture site it is important to maintain the proper immobilization position, as well as proper immobilization of any other joints that have an effect on fractured joint, such as the wrist.  This is the advantage to having it done in your doctor's office.

Timing: If you've had an operation to repair the patella, most times some motion is allowed early on, but typically full motion is not allowed for 4-6 weeks, depending on the injury and the repair method.  

When you do exercise walking, ellipticals, and gentle stationary cycling are good.  As for weights, avoid exercises like leg extensions, favoring closed chain movements like leg presses.  Good luck!
