Esophagus: After a bypass your stomach can only hold a small amount of food or liquid . Any excess stays in the esophagus  . It isn't supposed to be there so the esophagus cramps up  trying to force the food down . These spasms are a strong message to stop putting so much into your mouth . Try: I do not know how severe is the lesion in your sternum. Assuming is not serious...In general ice or heat (topical) works as antiinflammatory. Inmediately to injuries we prefer cold so if there is any bleeding will stop. After few hours heat or warmth is the most common anti inflammatory but some people prefer cold. Make sure there is nothing else like rib fractures or any other pathology. Part 2.

i have costochondritis from years of working out. went a little too heavy last friday. having sternum pain hurts to the touch and in occasion hurts when i cough. even lying down makes it worse. ice or heat therapy for it?

: Strenuous workouts with weights can result in separation of a rib from the sternal plate, causing the pain described.  If the pain persists, see a physician for a chest x-ray to establish this cause.  Best is to stop lifting which may allow the rib to reattach to the sternum.

when i eat or drink i get a spasm on the left side of my chest. it happens randomly and when i'm in heat or working out. what could it be?

Might not be GERD: Chest pain is nothing to ignore! the potential origin of your symptoms includes: heart, lungs, mediastinum, esophagus, musculoskeletal, pericardium (sac around the heart), pleuritis, bronchiitis, or referred pain from a remote site.  Your doctor will be concerned about accompanying fever, blood with coughing, vomiting, shortness or breath, difficulty reclining, tenderness. Get checked please.

Maybe: Heat is a stressor.  Vasodilation and increased cardiac output act as our compensatory mechanisms to release heat fom the skin.  In a structurally or functionally inhibited heart this increased workload cn be problematic, causing symptoms of chest pain or heart failure.

Unlikely but...: Many things can cause squeezing chest pains. Heart attacks are extremely rare in 19 yo women. However, spasm of the esophagus caused by acid reflux can cause identical symptoms and is MUCH more common in young women. Highly unlikely: Heart attack pain occurs at the left and not the right side. Thus the pain is likely from elsewhere (gallbladder?).
