Erupting or ?: You may or may not have enough room for your wisdom teeth to erupt.  You may have swollen gums from the normal eruption of your wisdom teeth, or an infection, pericoronitis (inflammation) or food impaction. See a dentist to determine the cause and advice as what to do.  Take some otc pain medication and rinse with salt water in the meantime.

Extraction: Pericoronitis is a condition when gum surrounding the tooth is inflamed.  It occurs frequently in the area of wisdom teeth, when a partial erupting posiiton causing inflammation and trauma to the gingiva (due to plaque collected, poor oral hygiene, and traumatic occlusion in the area).  Extraction would be a definitive treatment.  Good brushing and antibiotic is only for temporary relief.

See your dentist: If the teeth are just erupting or partially impacted (stuck, angled) some folks have recurrent problems that can be addressed.  If the tooth itself is decayed or abcessed it may need to be removed. Not all wisdom teeth need to be removed but ones that continually impact your life should be. You and your dentist can make that decision.

: It will be a painless procedure, you will be totally anesthetized. Depending on the difficulty of the extraction you may have some post operative swelling and/or pain which can be managed with appropriate medications.

: Return to your dentist, and discuss a referral to a gum specialist.  Sometimes, gargling with dilute hydrogen peroxide solution can provide temporary relief.  If you take Dilantin, that may represent the cause.  Discuss all of this with your dentist.

28 yr old female, experiencing swollen gum behind lower back molar- left side. hurts mostly when touched. never had bottom wisdom teeth, only the 2 top ones came in my early 20s. could this be a wisdom tooth erupting? swelling is in that area.
