i have reoccurring boils in groin area and folliculitis in scalp for a long time. could there be a common ground causing these two sort of similar skin problems?

: These are common in people who have a nest of invasive staph germs living constantly in the nasal membranes. These eventually spread to fingers that touch the face/nose and will travel to any site those fingers touch. Resolution often requires a complicated combination of oral meds/special bathing and application of antibiotic ointment to the nasal entrance.

Folliculits: The most common cause of folliculitis is a bacteria called staphylococcus aureus which is treated with oral antibiotics or topical antibiotics both of which are by prescription.

Not really: Herpes lesions typically resemble blisters that rupture, form shallow ulcers, then heal with scab formation.  Herpes lesions are painful. Hot tub folliculitis usually involves large surfaces of the body, and looks like red bumps and/ or pustules. There are no ulcers

Yes we do not have: a way to guarantee complete eradication of MRSA.  So it stays on your skin in small concentration and lives happily along with the billions of other bacteria that inhabit there.  And if you are prone to skin infections, then most likely they will continue to cause problems in the future.  Just hopefully not too often.  Washing with Hibiclens and such has not been proven to help consistently.

how good are blood tests for hsv 1 and 2? i have adult acne, folliculitis, sometimes skin boils, and i occasionally get pimples in my groin area and even on the shaft of my penis. i've had several negative blood tests for hsv 1 and 2. concern?

: Rapid serologic testing has positive and negative predictive values of 92 and 99 percent, respectively. It means if you are tested negative, 99 percent you do not have HSV infection. Because you were tested (-) many times so chance of HSV infection is almost zero by statistics.

Adenopathy: Enlarged inguinal lymph nodes are very common since they are in a very "dirty" area of the body and they clean things up for a living. Although if the folliculitis was actually the reason for their presence, they may stay large for a lengthy time period, and sometimes may never go away. If they are not enlarging and you have no other symptoms would not worry.  Good luck.

Any Brand is Good: It does not matter you can use any brand and if it does not get better than consult your doctor as you may need a topical antibiotic and/or Systemic Antibiotics

Possible infection.: I assume you have an abscess in the groin which may need  incision and drainage , may be biopsy and also antibiotics. So please go and see a surgeon asap before you have more complications.

Sometimes: Folliculitis caused by bacterial infection can be painful.  Other kinds are itchy, and still others have no symptoms at all.

Different ways: If it is not severe and over the counter benzoyl peroxidewash maybe all you need. If it is serious in that you have a lot of lesions, i would see your primary care doctor or a dermatologist to see if an oral antibiotic is necessary.
